CHARACTERS

TEACHER ALICE – Mixed-race Latina-American. Public school teacher from New Orleans. Speaks with an uptown New Orleans accent. As is customary with the uptown New Orleans dialect, the accent thickens with emotion, alcohol or as the occasion dictates.

BAG L. – African-American woman over 40 years of age. A goddess, prophetess and spirit who comes to Teacher Alice in the form of a Bag Lady. At times she is brassy and streetwise. At times she is filled with wonder and appreciation for life and nature with poetry and music in her voice.

KATRINA-HIROSHIMA – Male or female. Any age. The physical embodiment of the destructive forces confronting Karina refugees. Filled with genuine rage and a wild sense of fun. She takes various forms: 1) A flamboyant and angry drag queen of sorts. 2) Crazy, heartless, Texas bureaucrat/relief aid worker, 3) The echo of death.

RESTAURANT BEAUX - Anglo-American/New Orleans “Y’at”. A chef/restaurant owner who is passionate about food, women, and smoking pot. Innocent, sensual, and visceral. Sometimes a bit witless but he is, ultimately, loveable.

RESTAURANT DAVE – Well-educated African -American PhD. Candidate in Eastern Studies. A novelist, poet, philosopher, intellectual. Housemate to Restaurant Beaux. Manager of Beaux’ restaurant.

ACTOR EDDIE – Anglo-American male. Speaks with strong New Orleans or any southern accent. Quiet, charming, a bit of a loner. An actor who works many odd jobs while caring for his ailing mother. Attracted to Teacher Alice.

LADY MISSISSIPPI – Any race. Tough and rough around the edges. Jazz and blues singer.

PHOTOGRAPHER PHIL – College student working on an MFA in photography. Infatuated with Lady Mississippi.

NATIONAL GUARD – Any race, sex, or age. [Double cast with Photographer Phil.]

NURSE CLAIRE – Anglo-American female. Neighbor and friend to Teacher Alice. Sweet, delicate, and gentle nature. A bit eccentric. Born in to a strict Catholic family but now attends African-American Baptist church.

Performances: at the James L. Meader Little Theater, Russell Sage Campus, Troy, NY October 27, 28, 29, 30
