Home Made Theater is proud to present, for the final production of its 26th
season, a beloved classic American comedy, Harvey by Mary Chase. In the
great tradition of American humorists like James Thurber, Harvey is a wild
comedic yarn, a fabulous tall tale. It is also a witty and perceptive
satire on modern psychiatry that gently but firmly lampoons high society,
greed and pomposity. When our hero, Elwood P. Dowd meets a six foot white
rabbit one night, they become inseparable. He introduces his imaginary
friend to everyone, causing great dismay to his sister, Veta and his niece,
Myrtle Mae. Their only solution is to have him committed to a sanitarium,
Chumley Rest, but this turns out to be not so easy....

Character Breakdown:

Elwood, 40s-50s, a dignified gentleman, somewhat old fashioned. A dreamer,
continually willing to see another persons point of view. Takes a genuine,
if naive, interest in everyone he meets. But he saves his greatest affection
for his friend, Harvey, who needless to say, no one else can see. In all
other respects, he would appear perfectly normal.

Veta, 40s-50s, Elwoods widowed sister. A woman of great energy. Anxious and
embarrassed by her brothers behavior. High strung. Easily exasperated and
distracted. Her greatest aim --to have her daughter marry well in
society--is thwarted by Elwoods incessant appearances with Harvey.

Myrtle Mae, late 20s-early 30s. The unmarried daughter of Veta and niece to
Elwood. A bit of a brat. She matches her mother in anxious behavior. Willing
to sacrifice her uncle to the sanitarium in order to be rid of his eccentric
friendship with the rabbit--and to gain control of the family home.

Lyman Sanderson, late 20s - early 30s, a clean, dapper, efficient doctor of
psychiatry and a disciple of the renowned Dr Chumley. He is official, bright
and capable. Around Nurse Kelly, he is also brash and unable to admit that
he is falling in love with her. Leading man type.

Ruth Kelley, 20s-30s The head nurse of Chumleys Rest, the sanitarium. Very
capable. Often called upon to act as Sanderson's assistant. Very attractive,
keenly intelligent. Ingénue. Tries to bury her attraction to Lyman
Sanderson.

Duane Wilson, late 20s- early 30s. Big, athletic attendant at Chumley's
Rest. Aggressive around women, a bit dim otherwise. Burly but must move
well. Robust.

William Chumley, 50's - 60s. The renown psychiatrist and owner of Chumleys
Rest. He cultivates the image of a grand man of medicine and breeding.
Officious, loves the sound of his own voice. Dominates any situation hes
in---that is, until Harvey comes along and changes his life!

Betty Chumley, 50's - 60's, good natured wife of William Chumley,
comfortable in her position as the Great Mans wife. Very social and
engaging, even a bit flirtatious with Elwood.

Judge Gaffney, 50's - 60's, Highly respected and trusted authority figure.
Level headed but slightly bullying. Very protective of Elwood.

Ethel Chauvenet, 50's - 60's, a grand dame in the mold of Eleanor Roosevelt,
but with a slightly Western twang. A matriarch and widowed woman with a
great deal of money and influence.

Lofgren, 40s or older. Taxi driver, member of the working class. Chatty,
amiable when paid.
