Cast Breakdown

    - All characters are Czech citizens, circa late 1970’s.

    - Vanek appears in all three one-acts.

*Vanek*: Male, late 30’s-40’s. A dissident writer reduced to manual
labor in a brewery. Bright, observant, cautious and committed, he struggles
with keeping body and soul together in a police state. He is constantly
trying to come to grips with both the moral failings of his friends and of
his own.

*Foreman*: Male: Mid 40’s-Mid 60’s. A voluble alcoholic brewery
supervisor. Coarse, uneducated and desperate. He struggles to find any
shred of value in his oppressive life, as well as to comply with a police
order he finds incomprehensibly opaque.

*Vera*: Female: 30’s early 40’s. Attractive, energetic former bohemian
turned mother and homemaker. Her world is on the verge of cracking up every
minute, and she must constantly overachieve to keep it together.

*Michael*: Vera’s husband, late 30’s—early 40’s. Former bohemian turned
successful businessman and father. Bright, urbane and obsessive, he spends
every moment trying to respect himself as aesthete.

*Stanek*: 50’s—early 60’s. Avant garde novelist turned television
writer. Extremely articulate, powerful and persuasive. Torn between his
duty as a father and livelihood. Can argue both sides of any question until
the question almost disappears.

Synopsis

Newly released from prison, the self-effacing dissident playwright
Vanek encounters friends, colleagues and an employer who offer to help
re-acclimate him to society. In these three comically absurd plays, Vanek’s
humble integrity offers a foil for the sophistry and duplicity of the
people around him.

Production Dates

Set in the 1970s, a dissident playwright named Vanek encounters friends,
colleagues and an employer who offer to help re-acclimate him to society.
In these three comically absurd plays, Vanek is a foil for the sophistry
and duplicity of the people around him.

Vaclav Havel, a dissident playwright in the communist era, not unlike the
Vanek character, went on to become the first president of the Czech
Republic (1993–2003). He wrote more than 20 plays and numerous non-fiction
works, translated internationally.
