*THEATER VOICES will hold auditions for a staged reading of George Bernard
Shaw’s Arms and the Man, directed by Eileen Schuyler.*

*Location*

Steamer No. 10 Theatre, 500 Western Avenue, Albany - corner of West
Lawrence Street.

*Times*

    Sunday December 8 at 7pm-9pm

    Monday December 9 at 7pm-9pm

Actors will be asked to read scenes from the play. Please arrive at the
start and be prepared to stay.

Rehearsals will begin in January, with performances February 14-16*.*

*Synopsis*:

*Arms and the Man* is a romantic comedy about the futility of war and the
foibles of human nature. George Orwell said of *Arms and the Man*, "It is
probably the wittiest play [Shaw] ever wrote, the most flawless
technically, and in spite of being a very light comedy, the most telling”
because the play’s moral--that war is not a wonderful, romantic
adventure--still needs to be told.

Please note: Although British accents will not be used (the play takes
place in Bulgaria), Shaw’s language is elevated—sparkling, literate and
witty. The play is available to read online for free at
http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/3618 .

*Seeking:*

*Sergius Saranoff*: Late 20s. A handsome young Bulgarian officer
accustomed to having his own way in everything. His fiancé Raina worships
him as a noble hero, but all in all he finds the demands of the “Higher
Love” exhausting.

*Captain Bluntschli*: Mid 30s. A skilled professional soldier from
Switzerland whose years of service in the Serbian army have swept away all
illusions about military grandeur. He is completely realistic about the
stupidity of war.

*Major Petkoff*: 50s. Raina’s father, just returned from the war. While
wealthy by Bulgarian standards, he is unread, uncouth and rather inept as a
military leader.

*Catherine Petkoff*: 40s. Raina’s mother, completely in charge of the home
sphere. Though fundamentally a peasant, she is enormously proud of her
position in society, and to keep it up, dresses as a fine Viennese lady.

*Louka*: late 20s. An attractive, fiercely ambitious servant girl,
determined to rise out of her station into the higher standing she knows
she deserves.

*Nicola*: 40s. A practical, steady serving man, who believes that to
achieve success, one must always know one’s place.

The role of *Raina Petkoff* has been cast.
