ABOUT THE PLAY:
A. R. Gurney's new play, Family Furniture, takes us on a meaningful path
through the lives of an early 1950s family of four; each of them are
determined to define what "love" means in their lives. The play takes
place at the family's summer home on the Canadian shore of Lake Erie
where the beauty of the ocean and joy of summer life allows the parents,
Russell and Claire, to guide their young adult children through their
early romances; meanwhile, we watch as Claire appears to be engaged in
an affair as she searches for more passionate kind of love in her own
life. Siblings Nick and Peggy are forced to confront the possibility of
their mother's infidelity while navigating their father's rigid but
"loving" demands on them - all this while they, too, are trying to
discover what love means for each of them.
Dramatists Play Services describes the play as follows: "Amid the gin
and tonics, vichyssoise, and tennis doubles of Buffalo's summer scene,
siblings Nick and Peggy must confront their mother's possible
infidelity, their father's apparent indifference, and their own
increasingly complicated love lives. _Family Furniture_ is a
coming-of-age-tale of one certain summer when everything shifts."
THERE ARE ROLES AVAILABLE FOR: 2 Males, 3 Females
RUSSELL, 50s (Father) - Russell is a fairly typical 1950s father enjoys
great respect from his children and wife, but who also tends to
micromanage their lives - and sometimes misses seeing the heart of his
family altogether.
CLAIRE, 40s (Mother) - Claire is an industrious, light-hearted woman who
is generous with her time, helping out many volunteer organizations;
such tasks do not fulfill her heart nor does her marriage, so the
audience wonders through most of the play if she is engaging in an
extramarital affair.
PEGGY, mid 20s (Daughter) - Peggy is a passionate, friendly young woman
who is trying to find her place in society and to understand what she
needs from love in her life. She is heading into her senior year at
Vassar College but by the end of the play, she isn't sure that is the
right place for her anymore.
NICK, early 20s (Son) - Nick is a bright, practical, and compassionate
young man who works odd jobs throughout the summer in an attempt to buy
his first car. He attends Williams College and wants to be able to
finally have a car on campus - and so he can go see his girlfriend,
Betsy, at the Bennington College.
BETSY, early 20s (Nick's Girlfriend) - Betsy is a highly educated and
opinionated young woman who tends to see Nick as her "project" so she
can shape and mold his moral compass. She is a strong student at
Bennington College.
