THE SECRET GARDEN
Book and lyrics by Marsha Norman/Music by Lucy Simon
Director: Maggie Mancinelli-Cahill
1st rehearsal: 10/28/14Runs: 11/21 – 12/21/14
Based on the children’s classic story by Frances Hodgson Burnett, THE SECRET GARDEN enchants and charms with a Tony-Award winning score. An orphaned girl transforms a neglected garden into a paradise and opens the hearts of all around her.
NOTE: Specific roles require actors to play violin, viola, woodwinds or Bodhran – Celtic style.
Seeking: 3F/1M - AEA
Mary Lennox: (We will see AEA, EMCs and non-pros for this role) Seeking young actor or actor 19-22 who can look 15 yrs old (range: Ab3-D5) A headstrong, smart and curious young girl – lots of emotional range The role of Mary Lennox is central to the story. It is Mary Lennox who finds her own heart and enables Archie and Colin to open theirs and regain faith in living again. (Song: “The Girl I Mean to Be”)
Martha/Dreamer Ensemble/as cast: 20s-early 30s (Range: Mezzo-Soprano Belt, G3-D5) Sassy, imaginative, smart, compassionate. Whatever life brings her, she’ll be able to handle it. Actor must play violin, viola, accordion or woodwind – any one. Yorkshire accent. (Song: “Hold On” or “A Fine White Horse”) (This track will be on a Chorus contract)
Rose/Mrs. Winthrop/dreamer ensemble: late 20’s-mid 30s (soprano, legit) Beautiful, self-possessed and self-centered, Rose is ruled by what others think. She’s intelligent and charming but lacks the maternal instincts and compassion of her sister, Lily. For Rose, the party must and should go on –with her as the belle of the ball. Mrs. Winthrop is the stern, collected headmistress of a posh girls school. Upper class British accent. (song: “A Girl in the Valley” or “How Could I Ever Know”) (This track will be on a Chorus contract)
Ben Weatherstaff/Major Holmes/dreamer ensemble: 40s-60s (Range: E3-D#4) Working class gardener. Knows more than he says. Charming, but can be a little bit of a curmudgeon, but always with a wink. Major Holmes is a seasoned military man with a strong military bearing. Actor doesn’t have to play an instrument, but we would welcome violin, viola, woodwind, horn or Bodhran. Yorkshire accent. (song: “It’s a Maze” or “Winter’s on the Wing” – which is a Dickon song, but ok for Ben auditionees to sing)
(This track will be on a Chorus contract)
Roles for Non-Union and EMCs: (3M/4F)
Request music and sides at above email. IF YOU PLAY VIOLIN, VIOLA, HORN OR WOODWIND – LET US KNOW! Non-pros receive travel/meal per diem, paid weekly.
Colin Craven: must appear to be 10 (Range: young voice A3-A5) Bad tempered and spoiled – but craves love. Has a good heart deep down, which Mary Lennox finds. Must have versatile physicality. (“Round Shouldered Man” AND “Come to My Garden”)
Captain Albert Lennox: mid 30s-late 40s. (bari/tenor) A good man who loves his daughter. Actor must be very strong singer experienced with harmony singing -- with a charismatic presence. A military man, he has an elegant bearing that comes with the service, but he is a loving character who appears as a ghost to Mary throughout the play. (“A Bit of Earth”)
Note Dreamer Ensemble – the “Dreamers” in The Secret Garden are present in every scene – they create lights, picture frames and statuary for the garden. They are part real, part spirit…They sing separately and in many of the ensemble numbers
Major Shelley/dreamer ensemble: 30’s. Baritone. Needs to have a military bearing, flexible movement and grace. Needs to have experience singing harmony. (“A Bit of Earth”)
Ayah/Fakir (role is combined)/dreamer ensemble: 20s-30s (mezzo) Mary’s Indian nanny who becomes a haunting presence in the play Somewhat exotic in appearance, graceful and lovely Must have some dance background to learn Indian traditional movement.(song from the show)
Alice/Jane/dreamer ensemble/: 18-early 20s. Friend of Rose’s in India/maid to Colin. Sweet and a bit afraid to make a mistake. (The Girl I Mean to Be)
Claire/Nurse/dreamer ensemble: 20s-30s: Mezzo. Needs to have good sense of movement and grace. (“Hold On” or “A Fine White Horse”)
Mrs. Shelley/dreamer ensemble: 30’s Mezzo. Needs to have good sense of period, movement and grace. (any song from the show)
