Great Expectations, by Neil Bartlett, is an eight-actor ensemble piece,
based on the classic Dickens' tale of a young man's coming of age, and how
his life is shaped by a series of mysterious events and people. It has
romance, mystery, drama, characters of all ages, and most of the actors play
multiple roles and multiple ages. This show requires very adept acting, as
it is not dependent on sets and costumes so much as the actors themselves,
to convey time and place. Also, the actors will be on stage throughout,
providing a variety of supporting roles. Auditions will include readings
from the script as well as some improvisation, but there is nothing needed
to prepare in advance, other than familiarity with the story and characters.
Pip: Lead role, male, plays childhood through 20's
Joe Gargery/Mr.Jaggers: Can be played by roughly age mid-twenties to fifty,
but must play opposite Mrs. Joe
Mrs. Joe/ Biddy/ Wemmick: Can be played by ages twenties to fifty, but must
play opposite Joe
Miss Havisham: Character is 40's to 60's, ghostly, odd
Estella: Raised by Havisham to break mens' hearts, has to play childhood to
early 20's, opposite Pip, must be beautiful
Pumblechook/Bentley Drummle: male, flexible age (30's to 50's) (script has
this actor also playing Sarah Pocket, but may move this around)
Herbert Pocket/Compeyson/Wopsle: Male, flexible age (20's and up)
Magwitch/Sargent: male, flexible age
Other parts played by all but Pip. More than eight people may be cast,
depending on auditions, so some combinations may be altered. We need an
ensemble of excellent actors of varied ages (3-4 women, 4-5 men).
The theatre is located on Rte.43 in Averill Park, a half mile past the
blinking yellow light by the intersection with the Lakeview Restaurant, on
the left hand side across from Ace Hardware. It is fifteen minutes from
I-90 and Rte.43 (Defreestville Exit), 30 minutes from Crossgates Mall area,
30 minutes from Delmar and Glenmont, 35-40 from Schenectady.
The Director has 30+ years of community theater experience, and has directed
Inherit the Wind, The Triangle Factory Fire Project, and the musical, The
Secret Garden for this theater.
