Synopsis:
A Broadway hit first produced on the West End under the title Gaslight and filmed twice, Angel Street is the story of the Manninghams who live on Angel Street in 19th Century London. They seem a normal couple, but Jack Manningham is slowly driving Bella Manningham to the brink of insanity. While he is out one night, Bella has an unexpected visitor from Scotland Yard. Inspector Rough is convinced that Jack is a homicidal maniac wanted for a murder committed fifteen years earlier. As the evening unfolds, this Victorian thriller reveals the secrets of the Manningham house in brilliant, suspenseful sequences. The play (and its film adaptations) gave rise to the term “gaslighting” as "a form of psychological abuse in which information is twisted with the intent of making victims doubt their own memory, perception, and sanity.”
Cast calls for 2 Men and 3 Women -
MR. MANNINGHAM – an attractive man in his mid-forties. He is well dressed, charismatic and authoritative, with a touch of mystery and malice.
MRS. MANNINGHAM – in her mid-thirties, she has been a beauty - but now she has a haggard, frightened air, with rings under her eyes, which tell of sleepless nights and worse. This is a woman haunted from questioning her own sanity.
ELIZABETH - a stout, amiable, subservient woman of 50.
NANCY - Attractive, impudent, and conniving serving girl of 19.
INSPECTOR ROUGH - middle-aged -brusque, friendly, overbearing. He is warm and intelligent with a dominating presence.
