DRACULA

The Schenectady Civic Players announce open auditions for the first production of their 88th season, Steven Dietz’s Dracula , Tuesday and Thursday, June 2 and 4, at their Playhouse, 12 South Church St., in Schenectady’s historic Stockade district. Sign-ups begin at 7:00 pm each evening, with readings starting at 7:30 p.m.

This new adaptation restores the suspense and seduction of Bram Stoker’s classic novel to the stage. As Count Dracula begins to exert his will upon the residents of London, they try to piece together the clues of his appearances – in a valiant attempt to save themselves from a hideous fate. Rich with humor and horror, this play paints a wickedly theatrical picture of Stoker’s famous vampire. 

Character Descriptions: 
Dracula: [Male 20’s-40’s] – Hundreds of years old, but drinking blood renders him young and virile. He has great strength and power to manipulate the minds of his victims. He can be both confident and ruthless.
Mina: [Female 20’s-30’s] – Strong of will and pure of heart. She is engaged to Harker.
Harker: [Male 20’s-30’s] – A solicitor (lawyer), chivalrous and proper. He is engaged to Mina.
Lucy: [Female 20’s-30’s] – Single, curious about the secrets of intimacy. She is courted by many men, including Dr. Seward
Seward: [Male 30’s-40’s] –He is awkward and insecure but passionate, in charge of an insane asylum in which Renfield is a patient. He is in love with Lucy.
Renfield: [Male 30’s-40’s] He is the narrator of the story. At times he seems insane, but in fact he is trapped between his hunger for Dracula’s immortality and his fear of eternal retribution.
Van Helsing: [Male 40+] A religious man and a man of learning. He is knowledgeable about vampires, although he keeps this away from the others.
Maids, Attendants, Vixens: [Male and Female] At least four actors will be cast to play various roles throughout the show. Should have basic dance and movement skills [see note below]. 
Note: We are seeking at least four contemporary dancers for this show, both male and female. There will be an additional audition for dancers on Friday, June 5 at 7:30 PM. Please come Tuesday or Thursday to regular auditions to read and inform us of your interest in these parts.
The staging of this script will use a very minimal set and all of the production values will be based on heavy tech. We will be using elements of modern dance and movement in many of the sequences. After the show is cast in early June, there will be a table reading and a forum for the director to discuss his expectations and vision for the show. Rehearsals will commence in early August and will be Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 6:30-9:30 pm at the Playhouse.
