SYNOPSIS: On the 21st of September, not so long ago, creatures from outer
space invaded our galaxy intent on world domination. Some of them took the
form of plants. Seymour, a hapless florist shop worker, discovers one of
those plants during a total eclipse and brings it back to Mushnik's Skid
Row Florist Shop, where it attracts a great deal of business for the once
struggling store. Seymour lovingly tends to the young plant, even naming
it Audrey II after his fellow floral assistant and the woman he pines for.
Soon realizing that the plant thrives only on human flesh and blood,
Seymour is promised limitless fame and fortune by Audrey II, providing he
continues to supply more and more bodies to satisfy the increasingly
bloodthirsty plant.
CHARACTERS:
Seymour Krelborn: Male, 20's - 40's; Vocal Range: Tenor A2 - A4.
An insecure, naive, put-upon clerk - our hero. He is also sweet and
well-meaning, somewhat shy, awkward and lacking in social skills. As the
show progresses (and the plant grows more powerful), so does Seymour's
confidence. Comic timing a *must*!
Audrey: Female, 20's - 40's; Vocal Range: Sweet-sounding Mezzo-soprano
with strong ability, G3-D5.
The other assistant in Mushnik's Flower Shop, Audrey is honest and
attractive, but possesses very low self-esteem, and, therefore, dresses
like trash, attracting all the wrong guys. She is currently in a
relationship with an abusive dentist named Dr. Orin Scrivello, DDS.
Seymour names his plant after her.
Mr. Mushnik: Male, 40 - 65 yo - Vocal Range: Baritone, G2-F4.
Jewish, middle-class New York. Owner of the flower shop; the boss. He is
given to cursing in Yiddish, grumpy, seldom smiles and often yells. His
personality makes him conniving and dark one minute, then suddenly upbeat,
happy and sweet. A failure as a florist, this almost retirement-aged store
owner has pretty much one thing at his core - self preservation. He is
somewhat fatherly toward Audrey, but oddly enough, not toward Seymour, whom
he eventually adopts.
Orin Scrivello: Male, Late 20's-40's; Vocal Range: Baritone, G2-G4. He is
tall, dark, handsome and sadistic. An egotistical, rough and insensitive
dentist and Audrey's abusive boyfriend. Dresses like a greaser but thinks
like an insurance salesman with the voice of a radio announcer. A
motorcycle-riding, black leather jacket-wearing tough guy. His addiction
to causing others pain, and his fondness for nitrous oxide, are both his
motivation for life and the eventual cause of his death.
Crystal, Ronnette and Chiffon: Females, 40+ yo; Vocal Range: Low alto to
supremely high belt; must sound funky, soulful, jazzy and huge with every
note they sing. Actresses of any size, shape and ethnicity encouraged to
audition.
Diner waitresses who serve as the primary storytellers, helping to move the
story along and providing some narrative. They function as both
participants within the action of the play, and as "doo-wop" chorus girls
outside of it. They are hip, smart, sassy and the only characters who
*really* know what's going on, occasionally singing to the audience
directly, with a secret smile that says, "we know something that you don't
know."
Voice of Audrey II (the plant): Soulful bass and strong singer. A funky
rhythm and blues voice is best. Actor/vocalist is located offstage; voice
should convey a conniving, street-smart "villain."
PLEASE NOTE: The following roles may be cast between one or multiple
actors:
Mr. Bernstein: A fast-talking media hotshot.
Mrs. Luce: A wealthy representative from Life Magazine; a schmoozing
business type who puts on airs. (May also be played by a male in drag).
Skip Snip: A smooth, trench-coated East Coast talent agent.
Customer: An overly enthusiastic passer-by.
WSKID Radio Announcer
Patrick Martin: A sleazy opportunist
The Puppeteer (Audrey II): An essential part of this production, he or she
will be the puppeteer for the medium and large-sized plants. If you can't
sing but ever wanted to be in a musical... this is your chance!
Performance dates are October 9-11, 16-18, 23-25

for an "older set" than usual here. If you are younger than the ranges
listed, but feel that you can portray older than you are, please don't
hesitate to audition.
The Ghent Playhouse is an all-volunteer community theater. If you have any
questions, please contact the director at (518) 477-2256.
