Casting Freedom Train with music by Garrett Morris and Ron Burton and book by Marvin Gordon

Freedom Train tells the thrilling story of Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad in a fascinating series of highly theatrical scenes using the period's rich musical tradition. Songs include "Follow the Drinking Gourd," "Steal Away," "Wade in the Water," "Good News, the Chariot's A-comin'," and many others still sung today.

Harriet Tubman was born a slave, but when she was 25 she made her perilous escape from a Maryland plantation, leaving her family behind. The escape route that Harriet followed soon became known as the Underground Railroad, and she quickly became one of its most celebrated 'conductors.' Up creek beds, through swamps, over hills in the dark of night, on 19 secret trips Harriet Tubman guided more than 300 slaves, including her aged parents, to freedom. Freedom Train is the story of self-sacrifice, dedication and survival, laced with warmth and a sense of humor that celebrates the human spirit -- a universal story for all.

Rehearses January 25-29; runs February  1-12, 2016 all in Albany, NY

to play 20s-early 30s; young leading lady, high energy, a leader, a fighter, charismatic

Rit: African American Female 18+
to play 20s-30s; character woman - plays Harriet's mother, sister and other characters; strong gospel vocals a plus

Ben: African American Male 18+
to play 20s-30s; character man. Harriet's father. Also plays William Henry; baritone, bass-baritone.

David: African American Male 18+
to play 20s; energetic, rebellious juvenile, Harriet's brother; baritone.
