A call for entries for theREP’s NEW Young Playwright Contest 

Capital Repertory Theatre to produce five 10-minute plays by teens, for teens, staring teens. 

ALBANY, NY – FERBRUAY 6, 2015

Capital Repertory Theatre announces a call for entries for their new Young Playwright Contest. Contest winners will see their work produced on theREP’s stage, performed by an acting company comprised of young aspiring actors (movers and shakers) that are cast in theREP’s new Summer Stage Young Acting Company. 

The five contest-winning plays will be professionally produced on theREP’s stage, with costumes, props and a set designed and built by theREP’s staff, and using a company of 15 young actors. The plays will be directed by Margaret E. Hall, theREP’s Assistant to the Artistic Director, who holds an MFA in Theatre Direction from the University of Essex (London, England).

In addition to the production of their plays, the five contest-winning playwrights will receive a mentorship with a professional playwright in June 2015. Each contest winner will be given ample time to work one on one with a professional playwright. During these mentorship sessions, the young playwrights will work on their script to learn and grow from a professional in the field.

Playwrights will also receive an invitation to the first read through of their plays by theREP’s Summer Stage Young Acting Company, an invitation to the opening night performance, and 4 complimentary tickets to further performances.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

1. Playwrights must be at least 13 years old and no older than 19 years at the time of submission, and must reside within a 90-mile radius of Albany, NY.

2. Plays must be no longer than 10-minutes in length.

3. Plays may have no more than 7 characters and may include one – and only one – adult character. The additional characters must range from 8-20 years old.

4. Submission’s must include the line: “See, what happened was…”

5. Submissions should also include the Young Playwrights Application (found online at www.capitalrep.org) as well as the script being submitted – both in digital format.

6. Submissions should be sent to Margaret E. Hall, Assistant to the Artistic Director, at mhall at capitalrep.org with Young Playwright Contest Submission in the subject line by Monday March 30th, 2015.

ADDITIONAL SUBMISSION INFORMATION

1.     Submissions will be evaluated on creativity, dialogue, character development, plot structure, and the inclusion of the line stated above.

2.     Contest winners will be announced on Friday April 3rd, 2015.

3.     Contest winners, and their schools, will be listed on the Capital Repertory Theatre website.

4.     Production dates are: August 12 – 16, 2015.
