THE FANTASTICKS, book & lyrics by Tom Jones & music by Harvey Schmidt, is
the world’s longest running musical – running for over 52 years in
Manhattan and entrancing generations of audiences alike. THE FANTASTICKS is
a funny and romantic musical about a boy, a girl, two parents and a wall.
The narrator, El Gallo, invites the audience to use their imagination and
follow him into a world of moonlight and magic. The boy and girl fall in
love, grow apart, and finally find their way back to each other.
Please come prepared with 16-32 bars of a Broadway show tune. Preferably in
the style of the show, but any style is acceptable. If you are comfortable
with specific song for a role from the show please feel free to audition
with it. All performers should be good movers.
No a capella singing. An accompanist will be provided for you. There will
be readings from the script.
All roles are available. Please note that some roles are gender specific,
and in this production some roles may be cast in different genders then
what is traditionally done. Please see character breakdown below for a
detailed breakdown.
Character Descriptions
El Gallo (Male, High Baritone, late 20’s – 50’s): As the narrator of the
piece, he is the liaison between the audience and the action onstage. He is
warm, cordial, and inviting to the audience, yet with darker moments. His
attitude toward the rest of the cast reveals a decidedly mysterious side.
Above all, he is grand and must command attention.
Matt (Male, Tenor/ High Baritone, 18-late 20s): As a young lover, he is
deeply in love, particularly with the idea of being in love. He lacks
experience in the world so, while not stupid, he is naive and perhaps even
foolish at times. His image of a young man in love is one of a gallant
protector, meaning that he approaches some decisions with a falsified
bravery that is little more than bravado.
Luisa (Female, Soprano, 16- late 20s):
As a young lover, she is in love. She is in love with love, the idea of
love, the idea of being in love and indeed everything remotely romantic.
Her dreams are more fanciful than those of Matt. Because of her particular
vision of romance, she deals with the world on a particularly naive level.
Hucklebee and Bellomy (MALE or FEMALE Roles Baritone/Mezzo, 40’s-60’s):
Blustery and Boisterous. Duo and team. Strong comedic timing a must. One is
a parent of Matt and the other a parent of Luisa. Always arguing and
bickering, but secretly plotting together for the marriage of their
children.
Henry /The Actor (Male, 50-70s, non-singing role: An aging, over-the-top
Thespian who specializes in reciting Shakespeare, he is a commedia clown;
his world is the stage and he knows no other reality.
Mortimer/Mute (MALE or FEMALE, any age, non-singing role): These two roles
will be played by one person.
Foolish comic actor who moves the action while not seeming to contribute
anything of substance. Mortimer’s specialty is dying on stage in the manner
of great adventures and melodramas. May be asked to speak in a cockney
accent.
Serves many functions—setting props as characters need them, assisting El
Gallo and Henry, and becoming the wall separating the families. While
omnipresent the character must also have the ability to fade into the
background. This is a functional character that sometimes interacts with
the others.
