CASTING NOTICE

The Orchard Project, an incubator for new work based this June in Saratoga Springs, is seeking actors to join a workshop reading of Eric Falkenstein’s MOMENTS WITH MLK, directed by Stephen McKinley Henderson (Between Riverside and Crazy, Jitney). The workshop will involve table work between June 10-14, with hours likely 10-6 but staggered calls. 

Actors can be AEA or not; stipend, regardless, is $150.

MALE ACTOR, African American, 50s, plays:

E.D. NIXON - leading organizer from Montgomery for decades. Blue collar, uncompromising, unvarnished. 50s. Also plays:
Rev. Fred SHUTTLESWORTH – Baptist minister and leading black leader organizer from Birmingham. An SCLC board member. Undeniably committed and fearless in to a degree some see as bravado even reckless with regard to his own safety. 40s. 
CROWD/CROWD MEMBER.
MALE ACTOR, African American, 20-30s, plays:

Fred RUFUS – Montgomery lawyer and organizer; young, serious and driven. 20s. Also plays:
JULIAN - Morehouse student, a founding member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). Charismatic, principled, thoughtful. Newscaster accent, 20s.
ANDREW YOUNG - smart, imperious Executive Director of SCLC; shields MK when    possible. 30s.
STUDENT 2.
MALE ACTOR, Caucasian, 40-50s, plays:

Stanley LEVISON - New York lawyer-businessman who becomes a reliable, selfless advisor to MK. Among the few MK trusts completely. White, northern accent. 50s. Also plays:
RFK (Robert Francis Kennedy) – John F. Kennedy’s brother and campaign director; future U.S. Attorney General. Yearns to do the right thing but balances hard-nosed pragmatic and political considerations. A shy nature contrasts with a sharp temper. White, Boston accent, 30s.
Police Commissioner SELLERS – direct, abrasive, white male, 40s.
MALE ACTOR, Caucasian, 30s, plays:

Harris WOFFORD – Washington lawyer devoted to Gandhism and civil rights; trusted liaison between Kennedy campaign/administration and SCLC. Drily witty, self-deprecating. White, northern accent. 30s.
Also plays:
Rev. GRAETZ – white pastor of an African-American church. Committed supporter of            the boycott. 20s-30s
BULL CONNOR, GUARD 3 and HOODLUM 3.
MALE ACTOR, African American, 40-50s, plays:

Bernard LEE – student insider with both SCLC as well as He becomes MK’s dutiful body man/travelling aide. 20s. Actor also plays:
JOHN LEWIS – Baptist seminary student in Nashville; highly trained in nonviolence;             sit-in leader; founding member and early chairman of SNCC; Freedom Rider. Innocent, quiet, brave and incorruptibly principled. Never hesitates to put his safety in jeopardy for the cause. Speaks slowly, simply, softly and earnestly. Early 20s.
MAN 2. 
ACTRESS, African American, 20-30’s, plays:

Diane NASH - Nashville student protest leader. Highly trained in nonviolence. Shows a brave face in public but is otherwise shy except when her fiercely-held principles are at stake. Early 20s. Also plays:
Rosa PARKS – seemingly meek but quietly self-assured and socially aware seamstress;        catalyst for bus boycott. 30s.
WOMAN and NURSE 1. 
ACTRESS, African American, 20-40’s, plays:

James FARMER - head of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE). Conceiver of the Freedom Rides. Prone to self-aggrandizing, blustery talk. Northern accent, 40s. Also plays:
LONNIE - student leader of Atlanta sit-ins. 20s.
SOLEMN REVEREND – highly revered elder statesman minister of Montgomery. 60s.
BLACK FRIEND, WILKINS (v/o), DOCTOR 2 and CROWD/CROWD MEMBER. 
MALE ACTOR, Causasian, 40’s-ish, plays:

MAYOR of Montgomery - outwardly charming. White, 30s-50s. Also plays:
COP 2, WHITE ACCUSER (northern accent), POLICEMAN, GUARD 2, JUDGE, VANDIVER, Voice of JFK (Boston accent), TROOPER FLOYD.
MALE ACTOR, Causasian, 40’s-ish, plays:

BUS COMPANY LAWYER – White male, 30s-50s. Also plays:
