Troy Civic Theater is seeking to cast five singer-actors for a forthcoming production of "City of Angels" to be performed Nov. 17-20 at the Meader Little Theater on the campus of Russell Sage College in Troy. Rehearsals start after Labor Day. The show is directed by Joe Phillips, with Frank Leavitt as musical director. The Tony-winning Best Musical with a score by Cy Coleman (Sweet Charity, Barnum) concerns a struggling novelist turned Hollywood screenwriter trying to adapt a work of detective fiction into a film-noir.
It features as a sort of Greek chorus (the film-within-the-show's soundtrack "score") a crooner, Jimmy Powers, and his backup act, the Angel City Four, a mixed male-female scat-singing jazz vocalese quartet in the mold of Manhattan Transfer or Lambert, Hendricks and Ross. We are seeking to cast and begin working with these roles in advance of the show's main auditions on Aug. 28, 30 and 31.
All five appear throughout the show, and Jimmy plays a key role in its latter stages. Jimmy is a handsomely reedy little baritone crooner (think a young Sinatra) with commensurate vocal demands (up to a G); please prepare an appropriate audition piece. (American songbook, Sinatra/Bennett style... )
The Angel City Four each need to have very clear pitch, very precise rhythm, must control their vibrato and tune well to each other in close harmony. All do a ton of singing in the show, including a vocalese Overture. Tenor sings D#2 to D4; Bass-baritone G1 to G#3; Soprano A3 to A5; Alto A3 to D4.
We are seeking to set up an audition at your convenience between Aug. 8 and 20. To sign up, Follow this link: http://whenisgood.net/rfncs3r and indicate your availability for a private audition. Please make sure to list a phone number and/or e-mail address on the "Comments" entry.
