The Ghent Playhouse announces auditions for the first production of its
2016-2017 theater season, *THE 39 STEPS, *based on the novel by John
Buchan, the movie by Alfred Hitchcock, and adapted for the stage by Patrick
Barlow.  The production will be directed by Deena Pewtherer.

Mix a Hitchcock masterpiece with a juicy spy novel, add a dash of Monty
Python and you have *The 39 Steps*, a fast-paced whodunit for anyone who
loves the magic of theater!  This two-time Tony and Drama Desk
Award-winning treat is packed with non-stop laughs, an on-stage plane
crash, handcuffs, missing fingers, good old-fashioned romance and over 150
zany characters, played by a cast of four.



*Auditions*:  Tuesday and Wednesday, August 16 and 17, 2016

                  Sign-in at 7:00 p.m. – Auditions to begin at 7:30 p.m.

*Production Dates*:  October 7-9, 14-16 and 21-23, 2016

                               Friday and Saturday Even Performances at
8:00 p.m.

                               Sunday Matinee Performances at 2:00 p.m.





*Casting Information*:  3 males and 1 female are needed for this production.
Those auditioning are asked prepare a joke to tell (no longer than 1 minute
long) using a British accent.  They will also be asked to read specific
scenes from the script.



*The play is fast-paced, funny and funnier.  Stamina, verbal and physical
comedy skills and multiple dialects are required for the roles.  Please see
the character breakdown below for more information.  *



*The Story*:  In *The 39 Steps, *a man with a boring life meets a
mysterious woman with a thick accent who tells him she is a spy.  When he
takes her home, she is murdered.  Soon, a mysterious organization called
“The 39 Steps” is hot on the man’s trail in a nationwide manhunt that
climaxes in a death-defying finale!  A riotous blend of virtuoso
performances and wildly inventive stagecraft, *The 39 Steps* provides an
unforgettable evening of pure pleasure.



*The Characters*:



Richard Hannay – Early 30’s- Mid 40’s.  An attractive, dapper, yet
sedentary, Canadian gentleman





***Annabella Schmidt – An exotic secret agent

***Pamela - A beautiful woman, lured into Hannay’s adventure, but skeptical

                                    about his claims of innocence.

***Margaret – A farmer’s wife.  A shy young woman who dreams of life and

                                adventure in the city.



**These roles are all to be played by one actress – Ages 25 – 40’s – German*

*Scottish and cultured British dialects are required.*



***Clown 1 and Clown 2 – Ages 20 and up.  Played in the English Music Hall
tradition.

**Between the two, they play over 30 characters – and the occasional piece
of furniture.  A wide-variety of German, Scottish and English dialects are
required.*



*Additional Information*:  The rehearsal schedule with be arranged based on
the availability of the actors who are chosen for the roles.  PLEASE be as
specific as possible in listing any and all conflicts or dates you are not
available to rehearse on your audition application.
