The Albany Masonic Temple
67 Corning Place in downtown Albany
Nobel Prize-winning playwright Harold Pinter's 1957 play, The Birthday
Party, is set in a run-down boarding house in an English seaside town. Meg
and Petey Boles own the boarding house, which houses one guest, Stanley
Webber. Stanley, who has isolated himself from his mysterious past, is
about to see his world explode into a nightmare when two sinister
characters arrive on his birthday and turn a harmless birthday party into
frightening mental breakdown. The Birthday Party explores absurdist ideas
of existentialism in a meaningless human experience, and is a "compelling
take on this blink-of-an-eye we call life."
CHARACTERS
PETEY BOLES, a man in his 60's, the owner of the boarding house
MEG BOLES, a woman in her 60's who helps run the boarding house and is
married to Petey
STANLEY, a man in his 30's, unkempt, a possible musician, angry and
depressed
GOLDBERG, a Jewish man who works for a unnamed organization, outwardly
polite, internally violent
MCCANN, an Irishman, also a member of an unnamed organization, simple,
physically aggressive
LULU, a woman in her 20's, a friend of Meg's, childish and flirtatious, she
is interested in Stanley
