Film & TV Style - Acting & Directing Workshop

Small business, corporations and independent filmmakers are producing more and more films and videos everyday!

Everybody with a camera is jumping on the bandwagon. That’s great, it creates more awareness and more opportunities for everyone. The problem is that many of these productions lack authenticity and thus, fail to hit their mark.

Regardless of how perfect the enunciation or how loud the words are shouted, simply recording a person turning written words into spoken words isn’t acting. This is documenting dialogue and when its off it can range from “ over the top” and “really bad” to "just not quite believable.” Either way, the viewer is not engaged, and that’s key. Yes, the words convey information, but audiences don’t connect with information, they connect to authentic people, emotion and experiences.

This is true in movies, television commercials and even promotional and training videos!

Making these performances believable and maybe even great, is a collaborative effort shared by the actor and the director.

If you’re new to this or just new to working with inexperienced actors or directors, I have two things that might interest you.

1. A free, four-part, video series that introduces proven methods and techniques used by working actors and directors. In this series I share video clips form the great acting instructor Sanford Meisner. In these clips Robert Duvall, David Mamet, Carry Grant and Sydney Pollack share insights into the techniques they've learned from Sanford. We’ll also visit Michael Caine’s acting workshop, Larry Moss working with USC directors, as well as two LA based acting and directing coaches. I’ve made these free because I truly believe it will help anyone motivated enough to study them. These also give me a chance to introduce myself to you.

2. A fee based, six week workshop. This starts Monday October 3rd, at The Linda, WAMC’s performing arts studio, Albany NY. This will run from 6 - 8:45pm. This is a collaborative workshop that will provide both technique and camera time to actors and directors. We’ll do script breakdowns and work together to uncover subtext, character backstory and define emotional events. We’ll work on scenes and spend significant time working on making adjustments and dialing in performances. We’ll work on film style, TV prompter style as well as spokesperson style performances. This will also include camera blocking and auditioning.

Through the years I’ve received many benefits, made a good living and acquired some awards as a result of learning and using these techniques.

I’d love to see you in the workshop, but if that’s not doable, please check out the video series. I’ve got a lot of time into creating it and I promise, you’ll pick up some great info. I didn’t make this stuff up, but I use it on every production and I’m passionate about sharing it with motivated actors and directors.

Be well and good luck with your future productions.
