The RPI Players Open Calls for Directors and Musical Directors for their
88th Season!
Troy, NY - March 10th, 2017
The RPI Players is seeking Directors for their 302nd and 304th shows:
Arcadia and A Little Night Music. The call for Directors will close on
Friday, March 31st.The RPI Players are also seeking a Musical Director for A
Little Night Music; this call will close Friday, April 14th. The RPI
Players are a student run community theatre on the Rensselaer Polytechnic
Institute campus.
The first mainstage performance is Arcadia, written by Tom Stoppard, to be
performed November 10th, 11th, 12th, 17th, and 18th of 2017. Arcadia moves
back and forth between 1809 and the present at the elegant estate owned by
the Coverly family. The 1809 scenes reveal a household in transition. As
the Arcadian landscape is being transformed into picturesque Gothic
gardens, complete with a hermitage, thirteen year-old Lady Thomasina and
her tutor delve into intellectual and romantic issues. Present day scenes
depict the Coverly descendants and two competing scholars who are
researching a possible scandal at the estate in 1809 involving Lord Byron.
Secondly, our Spring Musical is A Little Night Music with Book by Patrick
Quentin, Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. This show will be
tentatively performed on April 20th, 21st, 22nd, 26th, 27th, and 28th of
2018. Set in 1900 Sweden, A Little Night Music explores the tangled web of
affairs centered around actress, Desirée Armfeldt, and the men who love
her: a lawyer by the name of Fredrik Egerman and the Count Carl-Magnus
Malcom. When the traveling actress performs in Fredrik's town, the
estranged lovers' passion rekindles. This strikes a flurry of jealousy and
suspicion between Desirée; Fredrik; Fredrick's wife, Anne; Desirée's
current lover, the Count; and the Count's wife, Charlotte. Both men – as
well as their jealous wives – agree to join Desirée and her family for a
weekend in the country at Desirée's mother's estate. With everyone in one
place, infinite possibilities of new romances and second chances bring
endless surprises.
The RPI Players are also opening their call for Musical Directors for A
Little Night Music at this time. The Musical Director is responsible for
teaching all of the music to the cast, working with the Director and the
Choreographer to develop the show, and holding auditions for and conducting
the pit orchestra for all six shows.
If you are interested in directing these shows or want more information,
please contact the RPI Players Executive Committee at players at union.rpi.edu.
To apply, please submit a theater resume and a cover letter no later than
April 15th for Directors and April 22nd for Musical Directors. The RPI
Players Executive Committee will contact applicants for an interview date
and time. Please come prepared to discuss your vision for the show.
Sincerely,
Bryan Johns
President, RPI Players 88th Season
