Audition Infomation

Synopsis: It’s 1666 and the brightest, wittiest salon in Paris is that of
Celimene, a beautiful young widow so known for her satiric tongue she been
sued for it. Surrounded by shallow suitors, whom she lives off of without
surrendering to, Celimene has managed to evade love since her beloved
husband died- until today, when Frank appears. A traveler from England
known for his own coruscating wit and acidic misanthropy, he turns her
world upside-down, taking on her suitors, matching her barb for barb, and
teaching her how to live again. A wild farce of furious tempo and stunning
verbal display.

LANGUAGE: There is a fair amount of both profanities and obscenities used
throughout this ribald comedy, enough to qualify it for an “R” rating. The
language includes “damn,” “goddamn,” hell,” “sonofabitch,” variants of
“fuck” (used in a sexual reference), variants of “whore,” and other sexual
terminology. The play is written in rhyme!

All Ethnicities are welcome and encouraged to audition

FRANK - Male, 30’s-50’s; Seemingly humorless misanthrope. Romantic and
brooding. He has no patience for the ridiculousness of the Parisian society
– until he falls in love.

CELIMENE - Female, 30’s-40’s; Attractive widow. Uses wit and charm to mask
her true feelings and heartbreak. She is a consummate entertainer and
player of men. She knows how to bend them to her will.

ELIANTE - Female, 20s-30’s; Young society lady. Reserved yet secretly
yearns for action. She is a lovesick virgin.

PHILANTE - Male, 20-35; Polite and tactful. Appealing in his selflessness.
Has a penchant for drag.

ARSINOE - Female, 40’s-50’s; Self-righteous, calculating and bitter – in a
fun way. Clings to her lost youth and beauty.

CLITANDER - Male, 40-50’s; Rich suitor to Celimene. A bloated, influential
fashionista. Because of his money, he gets away with things he really
shouldn’t.

ORONTE - Male, 30-50’s A terrible poet (who doesn’t know it) and suitor to
Celimene. A societal jack-of-all trades who seeks status.

ACASTE - Male, 30-45; Egotistical Marquis. Proud of being very stupid.

DUBOIS/BASQUE – Male or Female, 30s-60s; Bumbling servant to Celimene and
Acaste. Put upon and ignored. Good at physical comedy.
