AUDITIONS – THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK
The Classic Theater Guild is proud to announce June auditions for *The
Diary of Anne Frank*.
*The Diary of Anne Frank* is one of the most famous and haunting stories to
emerge in the 20th Century. The memoirs of this young Jewish girl, forced
to hide nearly two years to escape Nazi persecution, are an essential part
of how we remember one of the darkest periods of human history. Wendy
Kesselman’s adaptation of the original Goodrich and Hackett script draws
from previously unpublished parts of Anne’s diary, in a way that breathes
life into this passionate, complex young woman. For nearly two years,
Anne, her father, mother and sister, along with the Van Daan family, and a
neighborhood dentist, hide in a secret annex above Otto Frank’s former
office in Amsterdam, surrounded by the horrors of the world outside.
Anne’s hopeful spirit, and her chronicled story of resilience continue to
resonate deeply, making her story as vital today as when her diary was
first published.

ANNE FRANK (Teen). Actress must be able to portray a 13-15 year old,
progressing from an innocent and precocious girl to an introspective and
compassionate young adult.
OTTO FRANK (45 to 55). Anne’s father, very much the patriarch of the annex
family. He leads with strength and love – even tempered and striving for
peace in every situation.
EDITH FRANK (40 to 50). Usually reserved and soft spoken, yet has her
daughter’s fortitude when pushed. Closer with her older daugh5 ter,
Margot, she longs for a deeper connection with Anne, and worries about her
family and their fate.
MARGOT FRANK (15 -18). Anne’s older sister, she is more like her mother –
reserved and respectful, more mature and intellectual than her sister. She
longs for a deeper connection to others, but does not know how to achieve
this.
MR. VAN DAAN (45 to 55). Head of the Van Daan family, he struggles to find
his place as second in command. Intelligent but quick tempered and a bit
harsh. Wants his wife and son to be happy but on his terms. Very hard on
his son Peter.
MRS. VAN DAAN (40 to 50). Her fear of the unknown transforms into worrying
about the most trivial things. Places great value in her material
possessions, even under these circumstances. She can be a flirt and Anne
even calls her frivolous.
PETER VAN DAAN (15 to 18). The Van Daan’s only son. Initially annoyed
with Anne, their relationship grows into friendship, admiration, and love.
Not sure of who he is or what he will become, he struggles internally. Has
a good heart and is very protective of those he loves.
MR. DUSSEL (45 to 60). A fussy dentist, very difficult to get along with
and has little patience for his roommate, Anne. Puts himself first at
every turn. Very pessimistic about their future and the future of Europe.
MIEP GIES (FEMALE – 25 to 55). Secretary in the offices below, she helps
hide the families in the Annex. She is kind and worried and determined to
protect them. Miep is the annex’s daily connection to the outside world,
and keeps them stocked with food, books, and news.
MR. KRALER (40 to 60). Otto Frank’s business partner, helps to hide the
members of the annex. Like Miep, he never questions his obligation to do
what is right. A dignified man, he is at a loss for the world that is
unraveling around him.
