The Classic Theater Guild will hold auditions for Beth Henley’s comedy
“Crimes of the Heart” at 7 p.m. on Monday, December 9 and Tuesday, December
10 at the Congregation Beth Israel, 2195 Eastern Parkway, Schenectady, NY.
Auditions will consist of readings from the script. John Birchler will
direct. (In case weather forces a postponement, there will be another
audition on Wednesday, December 11.)
Synopsis: The scene is Hazelhurst, Mississippi, where the three Magrath
sisters have gathered to await news of the family patriarch, their
grandfather, who is living out his last hours in the local hospital.
Lenny, the oldest sister, is unmarried at 30 and facing diminishing marital
prospects. Meg, 27, the middle sister, who quickly outgrew Hazelhurst, is
back after a failed singing career on the West Coast. Babe, 24, the
youngest, is out on bail after having shot her husband in the stomach.
Their troubles, which are grave yet hilarious, are highlighted by their
priggish cousin Chick, 29; Barnett Lloyd, 26, the awkward lawyer who tries
to keep Babe out of jail while falling in love with her; and Doc Porter,
30, Meg’s old boyfriend.
The show will run for six performances between February 20 and March 1,
2020. There are roles for 4 women and 2 men, all of whom must be able to
play characters in their 20s or early 30s. Rehearsals will take place 2,
3, or 4 times a week beginning December 12, the variations the result of
seasonal holidays and John’s January vacation.
