The winner of five 2015 Tony Awards including Best Musical, Fun Home is based on Alison Bechdel's best-selling graphic memoir. This groundbreaking production introduces us to Alison at three different ages, revealing memories of her uniquely dysfunctional family that connect with her in surprising new ways. When her father dies unexpectedly, graphic novelist Alison dives deep into her past to tell the story of the volatile, brilliant, one-of-a-kind man whose temperament and secrets defined her family and her life. Moving between past and present, Alison relives her unique childhood playing at the family’s Bechdel Funeral Home, her growing understanding of her own sexuality, and the looming, unanswerable questions about her father’s hidden desires.

"Heart-gripping and cathartic, FUN HOME occupies the place where we all grew up" (The New York Times).

"Fun Home" is a refreshingly honest, wholly original musical about seeing your parents through grown-up eyes.”

Prepare for the audition with a musical theatre song (post-1960), preferably from the show. Also appropriate are works of the following composers: Finn, LaChiusa, Brown, Tesori, and Sondheim. An accompanist will be provided. Readings from the script will also be part of the process.

Roles
Alison Bechdel (Lead): Female, 30-48
lesbian cartoonist; wry, pragmatic, super intelligent; Alison is stuck artistically, and goes in search of the pieces of the story of her father's demise in an effort to heal herself. Range: Alto - low E to belt C#5.

Bruce Bechdel (Lead): Male, 35-60
Alison’s father. A high-school English teacher and funeral home director, who spends his spare time on the historic restoration of his home. A complex man with a hot temper as a result of years of repression. He can be caring and attentive to his children but is also quick to anger. He is almost bi polar in his approach throughout the show.
Ability to play some piano a plus. Vocal range: B to a G above middle C.

Helen Bechdel (Lead): Female, 35-50
Alison’s mother; intelligent, composed, with a quiet coiled intensity; formerly a promising actress, now an English teacher, she is frustrated and exhausted by her tumultuous, emotionally abusive marriage.
Range: Mezzo - A flat to strong mixed E5

Medium Alison (Lead): Female, 18-30
Alison Bechdel as a freshman at Oberlin College (able to play 19), discovering her sexuality; incredibly well-read, hyper-intelligent, socially awkward, and overjoyed by sex. Range: Alto - strong mix-belt to C and effortless mix to E5.

Joan (Supporting): Female, 18-30
a student at Oberlin; she exudes a confident, sexual energy, with a dry sense of humor; unlike Alison, Joan is very comfortable in her skin and openly identifies as a lesbian. Range: Alto – must handle harmonies very well but no solo singing.

Roy/Pete/Mark/Bobby Jeremy (Supporting): Male, 18-30
Roy, a young man Bruce hires to do yard work; Pete, a mourner who visits the funeral home; Mark, a high school junior; Bobby Jeremy, the lead singer of a band in Alison’s imagination. Good-looking singer with a strong clean 70s pop sound. Range: High pop tenor to a B4.

Small Alison (Lead): Female, 9-12
to play 9-11 years old, Alison Bechdel as a child; precocious and opinionated, yet because of the era she’s growing up in, she doesn’t have the vocabulary to fully define herself. Range: B to B

Christian Bechdel (Supporting): Male, 8-12
Alison’s brother, he tries to be the leader but is overshadowed by Alison’s strong personality. Must be able to sing harmonies and move well.

John Bechdel (Supporting): Male, 7-12
