In the musical, alternative rock is employed as part of the folk-infused rock score.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:
(ALL ROLES LISTED ARE AVAILABLE)

*Ages listed below are character guidelines only*

THE GIRLS:

Wendla Bergman (Pop Soprano) Age 13.
A sweet, but naive young girl, the second youngest of the group. She is trapped in her family’s unwillingness to teach her about the adult world, but with every passing day, she grows bolder and more curious about her body. Both vulnerable and bold, she has an intense sense of curiosity.

Ilse Neumann (Pop Soprano/Belter) Age 14-15.
Beautiful and mature looking. A misguided young girl who is thrown out of her abusive home and ends up homeless, in an artists’ colony.
Kind and resilient while also broken and stuck in a cycle of abuse.

Martha Bessell (Alto/Belter) Age 14.
One of Wendla’s friends who is abused by her father, and she keeps the worst of the abuse to herself. She is smart, romantic and longs for more.

Anna (Mezzo-Soprano) Age 14.
A kind school girl and a hopeless romantic. She chooses to see the good in everything around her. Outspoken and fearless.

Thea (Alto belt) Age 12.
The youngest girl, the baby of the group. A confrontational school girl despite her young age and small size. She is Wendla’s best friend.

THE BOYS:

Melchior Gabor (Bari-Tenor) Age 15.
A headstrong, smart and charismatic schoolboy. He knows much more than the others because of what he reads in books and is able to see the corruption in society. His radical points of view about most things are correct but misunderstood. He falls deeply in love with Wendla, but takes advantage of her ignorance.

Moritz Stiefel (Tenor) Age 15-16.
Melchior’s intense and nervous best friend. He has an overwhelming confusion relating to sexual feelings and has a hard time fitting in with his
other classmates; he’s only able to socialize with Melchior. Highly sensitive and aware of his inability to fit into the system.

Hänschen Rilow (Tenor) Age 16.
A cunning and attractive schoolboy, who manipulates the other students, especially Ernst, whom he seduces. Like Melchior, he also appears to be very intelligent, but uses his knowledge in favor of the system. Must be comfortable with same sex PDA.

Ernst Röbel (Tenor) Age 15.
A sweet and naive classmate, he is often clueless. He is Hänschen’s love interest. Also must be comfortable with same sex PDA.

Georg Zirschnitz (Tenor) Age 15.
A hormonal schoolboy who lusts after his older, busty piano teacher. Has many comedic moments.

Otto Lämmermeier (Bari-Tenor) Age 15.
Another schoolboy who has a disturbing time dealing with his sexual awakening. Silent and keeps to himself, he is quiet but longs for more.
