Synopsis: Based on the experiences of the Tuskegee Airmen, FLY follows follows four courageous Black pilots as they train to fly combat aircraft during WWII. Facing powerful conflict both on and off the battlefield, the men form a lasting brotherhood, paving the way for the desegregation of the military and providing hope for a changing America on the horizon.

Note: Although the Airmen don’t dance per se, all need to be fit and move well. Experience with stage combat very helpful. This is a play about a reluctant military forced to deal with desegregation of the Army Air Corps in the 1940s. The characters embody some of the prejudice that was present and use racist language at times.


CHET SIMPKINS: (appears 18) – He appears 18, a rather timid Black American.


OSCAR: (mid 20s) Black American, no nonsense, a Marcus Garvey-race man, confident, driven


J. ALLEN: (mid 20s) Bahamian, disciplined, self-assured, very proud (accent required)


W.W.: (mid 20s) Streetwise Black American, zoot-suiter from Chicago, ladies’ man, stylish


CAPTAIN HURLEY: (mid 40s) White American with a chip on his shoulder, career officer in charge of training the Airmen, bitter, uses racist slurs


BOMBER CO-PILOT REYNOLDS: (30s) White Midwesterner. Versatile actor plays an Instructor and Col. Snopes in the Tuskegee scenes


BOMBER CO-PILOT SHAW: (30s-40s) White Southerner. Versatile actor plays Staff Sergeant, Instructor and the Barman. Physically fit.


OPEN TO UNION AND NON-UNION ACTORS: All roles are open to Equity and non-union actors. Local actors with housing in the Capital District encouraged and welcome. Non-union actors must have availability afternoon/evenings/weekends. 6-day reh week/Mondays off


REQUIREMENTS: Please prepare and tape a 1-minute, serious monologue from a contemporary play or movie.
