*PLAY DESCRIPTION:*

“The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui,” written by Bertolt Brecht in 1941,
depicts the rise of a fictional 1930s gangster. Arturo Ui and his gang take
over the Cauliflower Trust in Chicago by violently eliminating any and all
opposition. “Murder or Protection” becomes the identifying catchphrase of
this politically charged drama. The play parallels the rise to power of
Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party prior to World War II. As the play draws
to its final moment, we are left to ponder that even though Adolf Hitler
was defeated, another will rise up and take his place. How prophetic are
these words. The Resistible Rise of Arturo UI is alive and living amongst us
today! This play is a true representation of Brecht’s “epic theatre,”
presenting its story directly to the audience.
