A World Premiere, commissioned by Bridge Street Theatre from one of
Canada’s most renowned playwrights. Out of work, out of money, and out of
ideas, David, a writer in his 60s, gives up his condo and moves into a run
down apartment building in downtown Toronto. There, his life becomes
inexorably entangled in that of his upstairs neighbor Shelley – a
gregarious lesbian in her 80s with encroaching Alzheimer’s-related dementia
– and her long-time canine companion Shadow. The curious story of a
reluctant care-taker who becomes the backbone of what gradually turns into
a kind of family.
Casting:
SHADOW: A scruffy rescue mutt. Long-time canine companion to an elderly
(but still feisty) lesbian with encroaching Alzheimer’s-related dementia.
He’s elderly, too, but still fairly active. And he talks – though only when
he feels it’s absolutely necessary to communicate, since it costs him time
off the end of his life to make the effort. Something of a rascally sage.
Shadow is a male (it’s definitely a plot point), and the actor playing him
should present as male, though they need not necessarily be
male-identified. We’re taking a stylized approach to the part. This won’t
be a person in a realistic dog suit. The actor will need to exhibit both
doglike and human emotions and physicality and should bring lots of their
own personality into the characterization.
This promises to be a very physically demanding role, and the actor cast
should be extremely agile, physically expressive, and possess genuine
stamina. Former gymnast, MMA practitioner, dancer, mime? On the shorter
side, fit, and probably around mid-thirties, but with a slightly raggedy,
been-through-it look would be ideal.
If interested, please send a headshot and resume ASAP to
casting at bridgest.org with SHELLEY’S SHADOW in the subject line.
