daughters, but he also grapples with the changing times and the
challenges faced by the Jewish community.
Seeking: (3) Male-presentingMotl – 20s to late 30s; A poor tailor.
Forceful. Energetic and idealistic man, always on his toes, both
literally and metaphorically. His attire is rustic and practical,
reflecting the himbele lifestyle of the villagers.
Perchik – 20s to late 30s; He is a young and passionate student
studying to become a teacher. An intelligent and charismatic
individual, with a strong sense of idealism and a desire to bring
about change. Perchik is outspoken and not afraid to challenge
traditions and authority. His progressive views and outspokenness
often clash with the more conservative attitudes of the villagers.
Throughout the story, Perchik grows as a character, learning about the
importance of community and family in the face of adversity. His
character adds depth and dynamism to the story, highlighting the
tension between old and new ways of life in a changing world.
Fyodor – early to late 20s; Fyodor is a young clerk with a charming
and friendly demeanor. Fedor is known for his passion for learning
and intellectual pursuits. He is often seen with a book in hand and is
considered one of the more educated young people in the village.
Overall, Fedor is depicted as a likable and optimistic young man, full
of potential and eager to explore the world beyond Anatevka.
(3) Female-presenting
Tzeitel – late teens or early 20s; Tzeitel is oldest daughter in the
family. Despite the obstacles she faces, Tzeitel remains a resilient
and determined character, advocating for love in a world that often
imposes strict societal expectations.
Golde – late teens; Golde is the second daughter. She is a teenager,
typically portrayed as being around 17 or 18 years old. Golda is
characterized as mature, responsible, and obedient to her parents and
the traditions of their Jewish community. Despite her dutiful and
submissive nature, Golde eventually finds her voice and stands up for
herself and what she believes in. This growth is seen in her romance
with the student, Perchik, whom she loves deeply and eventually
marries against her family's wishes.
Chava – middle teens; Chava is the third eldest daughter of Tevye and
Golda. She is portrayed as intelligent, independent, and curious, with
a deep love for books and learning. Her desire for knowledge and
understanding leads her to engage in secret conversations with Fyodor,
a non-Jewish Russian clerk, which eventually blossoms into a forbidden
love affair. Chava's character arc showcases the tension between
tradition and progress, as well as the struggle to find personal
identity and happiness within a rigid society.
