Proctors Collaborative is the Capital District’s leading regional arts organization with performing arts venues in Albany, Schenectady and Saratoga, and education, civic engagement and economic development initiatives throughout the region. We’re changing expectations about how the arts serve a community.
Capital Repertory Theatre(theREP) seeks Director/Teaching Artist for the Collaborative School of the Arts at theREP’s Summer Stage Young Acting Company. We are seeking a candidate looking to hone their skills, that loves developing new work, and is passionate about working with youth and diverse populations.
IDEAL CANDIDATE IS:
* A student of directing for the stage, or one who has recently graduated
* Although not necessary, candidate will have, or be in the process of obtaining, a BA in Theatre Arts (or equivalent experience)
* Must have some theatre directing experience
* Must have experience working with youth
* Must have experience working with diverse populations.
FULL CONTRACT DATES: July 10, 2023 – August 4, 2023
SUMMER STAGE 2023
Program Dates: (full time) July 10-28 | Monday-Friday
Staff Hours: 9am-5pm
Performances: Friday, July 28 at 4pm; Saturday, July 29 at 11am and Sunday, July 30 at 6pm.
Location: theREP’s Studio Theatre | 251 North Pearl Street (second floor studio)
Compensation: $1800.00
INTRODUCTION TO THEATRE HALF-DAY CAMP
Program Dates: (part time) July 31 – August 4 | Monday-Friday
Staff Hours: TBD (likely to be 9am-12noon)
Compensation: $300.00
PLEASE NOTE: full compensation for all four weeks of work as director/teaching artist, totals $2100.00.
SUMMER STAGE 2023
Summer Stage is a three-week camp for young actors (aged 13-19) at theREP. The company, working alongside a professional production team, will rehearse and perform the six winning (10-minute) plays from theREP’s 2023 Young Playwright Contest. Rehearsals and performances all take place in The Lauren and Harold Iselin Performing Arts Studio at theREP, 251 North Pearl Street, Albany, NY.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The Director/Teaching Artist will work with theREP’s Associate Producing Artistic Director and design team, hired by the Associate Artistic Director (AAD), in the full production of the Summer Stage Program. Including (but not limited to the following):
* Direct the six-winning 10-minute plays
* Work with the AAD in the casting of roles (ensuring each student has a minimum of 2-speaking roles)
* Determine the running order of the plays
* Coordinate with the design team in the creation of the set, props, lighting, sound, and costumes for the production
* Function as the lead teacher in the room, providing students with the following acting skills/tools:
* Basic theatre terms/etiquette
* Creating and implementing a warmup routine (which can subsequently be run by the stage manager/assistant teacher)
* Acting Technique(s)
* Movement for the stage
* Voice for the stage
* Character building
* Acting/Theatre Games
* Improv Basics
* New Play Development (inhabiting a character for the first time)
Director/Teaching Artist will work with the young playwrights in the further development of their plays, prior to the first day of the program as well during the program to:
* Provide feedback prior to the first rehearsal
* Deliver two sessions during the rehearsal period (1-hour per session) with each playwright, while working on their script
* Assist with prep work for the rehearsal period: including design meetings, production meetings, and dramaturgical work on the scripts chosen for the program
* Facilitate any conflict(s) that might arise between company members
* Maintain the professional standards set by, and expected of, all those who work at theREP.
INTRODUCTION TO THEATRE HALF-DAY CAMP
Introduction to Theatre Half-Day Camp is a pilot collaboration with Metropolitan Baptist Church where theREP provides beginner knowledge of the theatre arts to students enrolled in Metropolitan’s Summer Camp. Students will be transported by Metro Baptist to theREP. Including (but not limited to the following):
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Director/Teaching Artist will work with the Associate Artistic Director on an outline of activities for the week to:
* Introduce youth (ages 11-14) to a variety of basic theatre knowledge/terminology (ie: Stage Right, Stage Left, etc.)
* Engage youth in basic theatre games that are fun and work to build confidence and teamwork skills.
