Steamer No. 10 Theatre and the production team are committed to building a diverse, authentic cast. Artists of any gender identity, ethnicity, and neurodiversity are encouraged to audition! This production is only casting artists 18 years of age and older.

Street parking is available on Western and Madison, please do not park in the spots marked off for police vehicles.  You may park within the Citizens Bank parking lot (Western Ave) after business hours, but please take care to avoid handicap/unauthorized spaces with signage.

Thursday, August 8, 2024 and Friday, August 9, 2024

AUDITION DETAILS

Sign-in will begin at 6:30 p.m. Auditions will begin at 7:00 p.m.

Callbacks will be held by invite only on Saturday, August 10, 2024 at 5:00 p.m.

Artists need to only attend one audition session.

If you are not able to attend the audition dates/times but would still like to be considered for a role, please submit an audition form and a video audition (singing approximately one minute of music that showcases your voice) to eleahjayne at steamer10theatre.org.

Though not required, we invite those who are especially interested in the role of Marcy Park to  include a video of a gymastics trick/movement (or other related special skill if applicable).

Audition forms can be filled out prior to or at the audition.

WHAT TO PREPARE

Please come prepared with approximately one minute of music you feel shows off your unique talents and bring accompanying sheet music. Music in the style of the show is preferred, but not mandatory.

We recommend wearing comfortable clothing and secure shoes for a brief choreography/movement session.

PERFORMANCE DATES

November 8-10, 2024, and November 15-17, 2024
Fridays and Saturdays at 7pm, Sundays at 3pm

REHEARSAL INFORMATION

Rehearsals will generally be held on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings from 7:00 - 10:00 p.m. and on Sunday afternoon from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m.

A full rehearsal schedule will be available at auditions.

A read-thru will be held on Friday, August 16 at 7:00 p.m. at the theater.

A cast photo and promo shoot day will be scheduled based on cast and crew availability.

Attendance is mandatory for Tech Sunday (November 3, 2024), Tech Week rehearsals (November 4, 6, and 7, 2024)  and all performances.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

William Barfee: Male identifying. A Putnam County Spelling Bee finalist last year, he was eliminated because of an allergic reaction to peanuts and is back for vindication. His famous "Magic Foot" method of spelling has boosted him to spelling glory, even though he has a touchy, bullying personality. Range: E4 - B5

Leaf Coneybear: Male identifying. The second runner-up in his district, Leaf gets into the competition on a lark and finds everything about the Bee incredibly amusing. He is home-schooled and comes from a large family of hippies. He has ADHD and spells words correctly while in a trance. Other roles: Carl Dad or Dan Dad. Range: A3 - A5

Mitch Mahoney: Any gender. The official Comfort Counselor. An ex-convict, Mitch is performing their community service with the Bee, and hands out juice boxes to losing students. They have no idea how to offer comfort. Other roles: Olive’s Dad and possibly Dan Dad. Range: E4 - A5

Olive Ostrovsky: Female identifying. A young newcomer to competitive spelling. Her mother is in an ashram in India, and her father is working late, as usual, but he is trying to come sometime during the Bee. Having found comfort in its words and vastness, Olive made friends with her dictionary at a very young age, helping her to make it to the competition. She starts enormously shy, and shyly blossoms. Range: B3 - F5

Douglas Panch: Male identifying. The Vice Principal. Frustrated with his life, he finds the drive of the young spellers alien to him. After five years' absence from the Bee, Panch returns as judge. The character of Panch is a non-singing role, and actors are strongly encouraged to audition for it.

Marcy Park: Female identifying. Artists auditioning for Marcy please indicate any special skills related to the character (gymnastics, athletics, etc.) A recent transfer from Virginia, Marcy placed ninth in last year's nationals. She speaks six languages, is an all-American hockey player, plays Chopin and Mozart on multiple instruments, sleeps only three hours a night, hides in the bathroom cabinet, and is getting very tired of always winning. She is the shining example of the over-achieving suburban child. She is also not allowed to cry.  Range: C4 - E5

Rona Lisa Peretti: Female identifying. The number-one realtor in Putnam County, a former Putnam County Spelling Bee Champion herself, and the returning moderator. She is a sweet woman who loves children, but she can be very stern when it comes to dealing with Vice Principal Panch and his feelings for her. Her interest in the competition is unflagging and drives it forward. Range: B3 - F5

Logainne Schwartzandgrunenierre: Female identifying. Logainne is the youngest and most politically aware speller, often making comments about current political figures. She is driven by internal and external pressure, but above all by a desire to win to make her two fathers proud. She is somewhat of a neat freak, speaks with a lisp, and will be back next year. Range: A3 - F5

Chip Tolentino: Male identifying. An athletic, social, Boy Scout and champion of the 24th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, he returns to defend his title, but he finds puberty hitting at an inopportune moment. Other roles: Jesus Christ and possibly Carl Dad. Range: C4 - B5
