Farewell to St. Rose with “In the Blood” Saturday 3/16 @ 6:30pm: Reception
preceding the play with light fare, sweets, prizes and sharing memories
with fellow Rosebuds to commemorate the last scheduled production in St.
Rose Theatre. It’s always sad to lose a cultural space and it should be
marked.

In acknowledgment of being the last scheduled play in the St. Rose Theatre,
Harbinger is celebrating our strong ties with the St. Rose theater program
with a reception bidding farewell to the St. Rose Theatre hosted by David
Caso (Class of ‘94) and Brendan O’Dwyer (Class of ‘22). Also working on “In
the Blood” playing Hester is Nicole DamaPoleto (Class of ‘12), Stage
Manager Lauren d’Annibale (Class of ‘16) and our Public Relations Manager
Kayla DeMicco (Class of ‘21).

IN THE BLOOD By Suzan-Lori Parks
 Directed by TJ Collins @tjifridaypresents

It would be reductive to call “In the Blood” simply a modern adaptation of
Nathaniel Hawthorne’s classic, The Scarlet Letter, though the similarities
are too great to overlook. Instead it seems that Suzan-Lori Parks has taken
on The Scarlet Letter as a structural framework for her own drama, a road
map for allegory. The main character, Hester La Negrita, has five children,
each from different, and notably absent fathers. The family of 6 live in
destitute poverty beneath a bridge, where Hester tries to learn how to read
and goes hungry so that her children can eat. A merciless and brutal drama,
“In the Blood” offers at the same time a critical portrayal of the
treadmill of poverty and a powerful allegory for the subjugation of
African-American culture in an institutionally racist system.
