Anything Goes-- Extended an Extra Weekend Due to Advance Ticket Sales!
See the show that Schenectady Gazette advises "Run, don't walk, to Schenectady Light Opera's production to see how it ought to be done!"
Join us for a rousing entertaining farce set aboard the S.S. American, as SLOC Musical Theater ends their 2007-2008 season with Cole Porter's musical comedy, Anything Goes.
The age-old tale of Boy-Meets-Girl and the complications which ensue intrigue every audience, and no musical puts it on stage better than Anything Goes! This show is an amusing story wrapped around one of Cole Porter's most magical scores. It's a wonder that all the romances are sorted out and disaster is averted aboard the magical ship where Anything Goes! Featuring such classic songs as "Anything Goes", You're the Top", "Delovely" and "I Get a Kick out of You."
Director Eric Shovah and Musical Director Cathy Mele craft a wonderful evening of entertainment that features some of the finest talent in the capital district community theater community. The production features a return to the stage, in the lead role of Billy, of one of SLOC's most creative directors, Michael C. Mensching. After helming such successful productions of Jane Eyre: the Musical, The Full Monty, Songs for a New World, and Kiss of the Spider Woman, Mensching returns to the act, sing and dance under the direction of Eric Shovah. The relationship between actor director has an interesting beginning-- Mensching had directed, mentored and guided Shovah-- when Shovah was a 20 year old-- in his first acting role at SLOC as Pseudolous, in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. Mensching found creative success with his productions (The Full Monty, Jane Eyre, Kiss of the Spider Woman, and Songs for a New World made many area year
end Top Ten lists), and now is learning again to take direction from someone 20 years his junior. He is featured in a comedic role that has many costume changes and character disguises as the entire rest of the cast combined.
The production also features Laurie Burns in a stellar turn as Reno Sweeney, and Bob Hegeman (Sir Evelyn) and Casey Dinkin (Hope), who, along with Mensching add to the romantic quadrangle which gets straightened out by the show's end. Adam Coons provides comedic relief as Moonface Martin, along with his moll, Heather D'Arcy as Bonnie. Bill Hickman (Whitney) and Rita Russell (Mrs. Harcourt) round out the lead players.
In the true spirit of "community" theater, the production features several actors who are doing a great more behind the scenes as well as on stage. Mensching co-set designed and built the set along with Michael McDermott. Heather D'Arcy (who plays the role of Mrs. Eric Shovah in real life) also directed the choreography, while Adam Coons was also the Props Master. Community theater offers as many comedic moments backstage and behind the scenes as you will find onstage, as these double responsibilities offered many backstage/frontstage juggling routines.
This production features many full cast tap dancing numbers, romantic duets, comedy and intrigue. Sure to delight and leave you humming, this is a treat for audiences of all ages!
