Producers Joanne Peal and Jonathan Janssen proudly announce the continuation of Spotlight Players Community Theater’s tradition of big, beautiful summer musicals with the 2001 Tony-winning hit show The Producers.  Michael C. Mensching directs a show that is so outrageously entertaining, it will leave you exhausted and wanting more.  With the inspired assistance of Choreographer and Assistant Director  Heather D’Arcy and veteran Music Director Vince Bonafede, Mensching plans to put on a show that is a hilarious tribute to every show there is, good and bad, about putting on a show.

Producer/Director Mel Brooks took a real gamble when he adapted his 1968 cult film satire to the musical stage.  The story is outrageous: flop-covered theatrical producer Max Bialystock (Eric Shovah) realizes the road to his financial redemption lies in producing the worst musical ever written, raising more than 1,000 percent of the capital, and pocketing it all when the show is a one-night-only disaster.  Aided and abetted by a timid accountant named Leo Bloom (Jerry Gretzinger), Bialystock options the rights to the worst possible play they can find:  A salute to the Third Reich by one Franz Liebkind (Greg Dodds), a pigeon-keeping Nazi, called ''Springtime for Hitler.'' And for the worst of all possible directors?  A theater queen to end all theater queens, the lavender-voiced Roger De Bris (Ken Kasch).  Of course, if the show, by some insane chance, were to become a hit, Bialystock and Bloom would be thrown in jail.  Add to the mix a gorgeous
Swedish secretary (Laura Tortorici), a fawning sprite of a personal assistant (Ryan Glynn) and an ensemble of singing and dancing Nazis, and you’ve got the makings of a Mel Brooks comedic masterpiece.

Spotlight has assembled a top-notch production team to help bring The Producers to bold, brassy life in a technically difficult environment.  Mensching co-set designed with Michael McDermott (their 2 most recent collaborations won TANYS Awards) and is aided by Assistant Director Alexis Makey and Stage Manager Matt Sikora.  Chris Persans is Costume Designer, Ric Bello is Sound Designer and David Malson is Lighting Designer.

Tickets for the show are $15.  For reservations or further information, please call 518-210-9758.

This initial show of our 2009-2010 seasons will be complimented by the Capital District Community Theater Premiere of Jason Robert Brown’s Parade in May 2010, and our summer production of 2010 will be Curtains.
