On Sat. Feb. 27 at 7pm the Sand Lake Center for the Arts will be showcasing
The Singing Revolution. Created by Capital District residents James and
Maureen Tusty, the film is a documentary that tells the extraordinary story
of the non-violent path Estonia took to free itself from Soviet occupation.
In 1991, after nearly fifty years of rule by a brutal Soviet occupation, the
small Republic of Estonia confronted their occupiers by announcing their
independence to the world. Music played a pivotal role in this historical
event. The Singing Revolution tells the story of one countrys undeniable
thirst for self-determination and its unshakable belief in what it means to
be freeto be Estonian. Jim is a dual citizen of the U.S. and Estonia. He
and Maureen own Sky Films, Inc., working out of their office in Manhattan as
well as their home in Averill Park, N.Y. Jim was always hearing stories
about Estonia from his immigrant father, Julius, who came to the U.S. in
1924.
In 1999 and 2001, Jim and Maureen were given the chance to teach filmmaking
courses at a college in Jims ancestral homeland. For the next two years,
everything the Tustys learned stayed with them and they eventually asked
themselves two key questions: If not us, who?, and If not now, when?
With that dedicationand little elsethey proceeded to embark on what became
a four year journey in creating The Singing Revolution, a movie and a
movement. Both had already produced innumerable TV programs, commercials and
corporate films via their Mountain View Group production company.
Director/Producer Maureen Castle Tusty embraced her husbands heritage as
her own in the course of teaching in Estonia, falling in love with the
people of this country. For this emotionally moving and history filled
documentary, tickets are $8 and $5 for under 18. For reservations call
