The Steamer No.10 Theatre opens its 20th season with Cinderella Tales.
During the past 19 seasons we have produced hundreds of plays for children
and adults, presented nearly a thousand artists for families, and reached an
audience of more than 200,000 children, parents, grandparents, and friends.
We open this landmark season with three tales about Cinderella.  She is the
heroine of the world's most popular fairy tale with more than 900 versions,
every culture has a variation.  

 

Cinderella Tales is a compilation of three of those tales: Egyptian
Cinderella, The Glass Slipper, and our Cinderlad tale Billy Beg & the Bull.

 

Egyptian Cinderella - Recorded by the Roman historian Strabo in the first
century B.C. - A young Greek woman is kidnapped by pirates and sold as a
slave in Egypt.  Her manners and background make her stand out, with the
result that she is treated cruelly by the other slaves and servants of the
household.  Her only friends are the animals that live along the Nile for
whom she dances and sings each evening.  Her master happens upon this one
evening and has golden slippers made for her. One day a hawk - the god Horus
- steals a slipper and drops it into Pharaoh's lap.  He searches the kingdom
to find its owner, and when he finds her, makes her his queen. 

 

The Glass Slipper - the European version of Cinderella.   A young girl, with
the magical intervention her mother's spirit, escapes from her step family
to attend the Prince's Ball, but only until midnight.  As she flees the Ball
she looses her glass slipper, but the Prince finds it and uses it to find
her.

 

Billy Beg and the Bull - an Irish tale of a young prince and his pet, a
magical bull.  When his Step Mother threatens the Bull, Billy flees the
kingdom.  Just before the Bull is killed in a confrontation with another
bull, he instructs Billy to take his magic tail.  Billy later uses the tail
to subdue an Ogre, which gives him a pair of huge boots, that also fit
Billy.  Later he defeats a dragon and saves a Princess, but flees leaving
her holding one of his boots.  She tracks him down, and the boot fits.
