SLOC Musical Theater will present Carousel, Rogers and Hammerstein’s
classic musical. This beloved hit, based on a story by Ferenc Molnar, takes
place between 1873 and 1888 in a rugged Maine fishing village. The story
revolves around the fragile romance between Billy Bigelow, a drifter, working
as a carnival barker, and Julie Jordan, a local factory worker. A somewhat
dismal view of the tough working class life of this era and how they solve
their everyday problems emerges as Billy and Julie encounter difficulties
and face the consequences of their actions. However, the show is filled
with plenty of lightheartedness and laughs through the secondary plot line
featuring the playful and witty Carrie Pipperidge and her romance with
ambitious fisherman, Enoch Snow. Also ensemble numbers that include sailors,
children, roustabouts and townspeople are sure to show a brighter side of life
and that these people can really have a good time.
Songs that have endured for decades such as “If I Loved You”, “June Is
Bustin’ Out All Over” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone” are sung in this show
and will surely capture your heart.
Billy Bigelow will be played by SLOC veteran Shawn Hahn, Julie Jordan will
be played by Amy Shake, returning from last fall’s “Pirates of Penzance.”
The roles of Carrie Pipperide and Enoch will be played by Leslie Eliashuk
and Eric Nelsen, both newcomers to SLOC
Also among the principal characters in the show are Janice Walz as Nettie
Fowler; Judi Merriam as Mrs. Mullin; Bill Hickman and Sue Culver as David
Bascomb and his wife; Raymond Burns as The Starkeeper and Laural Burns as
The Heavenly Friend; Georgianna Jordan as Louise Bigelow; John LaCombe as
Enoch Snow, Jr.: and Phil Matthei as Captain Watson, skipper of the whaler
