GHENT PLAYHOUSE ANNOUNCES ITS FINAL PRODUCTION FOR THE SEASON: The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee

 .

The Ghent Playhouse will present “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” as its final production of the 2012-2013 season. A musical comedy conceived by Rebecca Feldman with music and lyrics by William Finn, a book by Rachel Sheinkin and additional material by Jay Reiss, it was initially developed by Barrington Stage Company. Originally directed by James Lapine in 2004, this little musical garnered six Tony awards and ran for several years on Broadway before going on tour.

The show centers on a fictional spelling bee set in the fictitious Putnam Valley Middle School. Six young people in the throes of puberty, overseen by grown-ups who barely managed to escape childhood themselves, learn that winning isn’t everything and losing doesn’t necessarily make you a loser. The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is an hilarious tale of overachievers’ angst chronicling the experience of six adolescent outsiders vying for the spelling championship of a lifetime. The production is being directed by Rachael Sheffer, who recently worked at the Playhouse as assistant director on the hit production of “Urinetown.”

The production opens on Friday, May 17 and runs through Sunday June 2 with the usual schedule of performances: Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are $18 each ($15 for Friends of the Ghent Playhouse) and may be reserved by calling 1-800-838-3006.
