TOWERINGTRAGEDY, ‘KING LEAR, FEBRUARY 27 – MARCH 23 
*The Epic, Self-Inflicted Travails of‘a Man More Sinn’d Against than Sinning’ *
 
CAMBRIDGE,NY (February 19, 2014)—The award-winning Theatre Company at Hubbard Hall (TCHH) will present Shakespeare’sKing Lear, widely-regarded as thegreatest tragic drama ever written, February 27 – March 23.
 
Based on the legend of Leir ofBritain, the title character descends into madness after dividing his estatebetween Goneril and Regan, the two daughters who flatter him, whiledisinheriting Cordelia, the daughter who truly loves him. The role of Lear hasbeen coveted and played by many of the world's most accomplished actors, and noless an observer than George Bernard Shaw said, “No man will ever write abetter tragedy than Lear.”
 
TCHH Artistic Director John Hadden will perform Lear andco-direct with Ava Roy, who enacts the dual roles of Cordelia and the Fool.Other leading roles will be undertaken by Carmen-Maria Mandley as Goneril, MykaPlunkett as Regan, Gino Costabile as Edmund, Doug Ryan as Gloucester, JohnTerry as Kent and James Udom as Edgar.
 
“Lear is Shakespeare’s universal epic,encompassing a dying king, chaos in nature, family blood feuds, madness and theheroic will to love and understand,” said Hadden.
 
KingLear’s productionstaff includes Benjie White as lighting designer, Sandy Klein and Phoebe Martelas costume designers, John Rosmus as sound designer, and Kate Johnson as stagemanager.
 
There will be13 performances of King Lear,February 27 (Pay What You Will / Open Rehearsal) at 8 p.m., February28 and March 1, 7, 8, 14 15, 21 and 22 at 8 p.m.; and March 2, 9, 16 and 23 at2 p.m. Tickets are $22 for Hubbard Hall members, $25 for non-members and $15for students and children. An Opening Night Dinner will take place Friday,February 28 at 6 p.m. in the Beacon Feed Studio. The menu will feature assortedhomemade oatcakes and crackers, fresh cheeses and pate, lightly pickled rootvegetables, mushroom soup, roasted meats, faro with herbs and scallions, spinachtart, blackberry flummery on sponge cake and assorted beverages.
