The second play of *Schen**ectady Civic Players’* 90th Anniversary Season, *As
Bees in Honey Drown * by Douglas Carter Beane, and directed by Mark
Stephens, opens Friday, December 1, and runs through Sunday, December 10,
at its 12 South Church Street Playhouse in Schenectady’s historic Stockade
district.

In Beane’s satirical comedy, called “A delicious souffle of satire”
by the New York Times, Evan Wyler has just finished a photo shoot. No, he’s
not a super model, just a twenty-something New York writer savoring the
success of his debut novel. Evan captures the attention of Alexa Vere de
Vere, a glamorous woman of mystery who’s made the world of celebrity her
home. In fact, it’s her religion. She wants Evan to write the screenplay
of her life story. But, Alexa vanishes, leaving him to foot the bill for
all the dinners and Armani suits they’ve gone through. Trying to find
Alexa, Evan discovers a chain of people who have fallen under her spell and
acted as her meal ticket.

The play premiered Off Broadway at the Greenwich House Theatre
on June 19, 1997, transferring to the Off-Broadway Lucille Lortel Theatere
on July 24, 1997, and closed on June 7, 1998 after 366 performances. Beane
won an Outer Critics Circle Award for his writing

Wyler), Cristine M. Loffredo (as Alexa Vere de Vere), and Jason Biszick,
