Subject: Press Release: Play at Schenectady Civic Center 9/10-9/12 The Guys

THEATER COMPANIES JOIN FORCES TO REOPEN DOORS, FEATURING A 9/11 PLAY RELEVANT TO A POST-COVID WORLD Schenectady Civic Players and Local Actors Guild of Saratoga team up to present The Guys, a play written in the wake of the World Trade Center attack, that is remarkably relevant to a world recovering from Covid-19.
Schenectady, N.Y. (7/1/21) – Schenectady Civic Players will re-open its doors with a Local Actors Guild of Saratoga production of The Guys – a play about the aftermath of the World Trade Center attack, that is remarkably relevant in a post-Covid world. The Guys, by Anne Nelson, is the true story of a New York City fire captain and a journalist, whose worlds collide in the days following 9/11. The play is based on Nelson's personal experiences helping a fire captain compose eulogies for the men lost in the World Trade Center attack.
REOPENING THE THEATER
Written in nine days, The Guys helped to bring audiences back to The Flea theater in Lower Manhattan following the tragic events of September 11, 2001. The original cast included Sigourney Weaver and Bill Murray. The show has since been performed in 48 US states and in the Czech Republic, Argentina, Japan, Italy, and Poland. Local Actors Guild president Jeremy Buechner is honored to reprise the role of Nick, the fire captain, and is grateful to Schenectady Civic for sharing their performance space. “The Guys, for me,is about reopening. It was the very first play LAGS presented back in 2004, in our former location in Saratoga,” Buechner said. “The play was written to help bring people back to theaters and begin the return to normal, so It's appropriate that it should help reopen theaters in the aftermath of Covid-19.”

RELEVANT MESSAGE FOR A POST-COVID WORLD
Actor/writer Mary Darcy returns to the Capital Region from New York City to help open the theater, on the 20th anniversary of 9/11. “This is the right time to revive this play,” Darcy says, “not just because it's the anniversary of 9/11, but because it directly speaks to recovering from great tragedy. There are lines that could have been written yesterday – about wanting to help but not having skills, about needing each other, about when and how you return to normal. The Guys is about authentic human connection in the aftermath of great tragedy – something we saw twenty years ago and something we're seeing again today.” Darcy played the role of the journalist at Capital Rep for the fifth anniversary of 9/11.
The Guys will be presented at Schenectady Civic Players, as an addition to the company's regular season. Schenectady Civic Players President, Duncan Morrison, says the company was pleased to be able to offer LAGS a space for this special event, after learning that they would not be able to return to the Saratoga Arts Center, the company's home for the last 17 years. “Coming out of the Covid closure,” Morrison said, “ we felt that helping another company of artists return to the stage would benefit the entire Capital District theater community.” The Guys will be presented at Schenectady Civic Players, 12 S Church Street in Schenectady, on September 10 and 11 at 8 pm, and on Sunday September 12 at 2:30 pm. Tickets will be available beginning July 15 through Schenectady Civic Players
