On the eve of her twenty-fifth birthday, Catherine, a troubled young woman,
has spent years caring for her brilliant but unstable father Robert, once a
renowned mathematician. Now, following his death, she must deal with the
aftermath, including the arrival of her estranged sister, Claire, as well as the
attentions of Hal, a former student of Robert's who hopes to find valuable work in
the 103 notebooks that he left behind.

Over the long weekend that follows, a burgeoning romance and the discovery of
a mysterious notebook draw Catherine into the most difficult problem of all:
how much of her father's genius -- or madness -- will she inherit?

Character breakdown:

Catherine (25) - An emotionally volatile woman who for five years has acted
as sole caregiver to an ailing father. Though intellectually dynamic, she has
allowed herself to withdraw, her tart demeanor masking an apprehension
regarding interpersonal relationships and the possibilities of life.

Robert (50s) - A widowed college professor whose mathematical skills brought
him world prominence. He is stern and precise by nature but also warm and
considerate.

Hal (28) - A former graduate student of Robert's, he is interested in both
investigating the work his professor left behind and pursuing his affections for
Catherine.

Claire (29) - Stylish and attractive, she is a bright and successful
businesswoman who nevertheless has long held an adversarial relationship with her
sister Catherine. The geographic absence from her father's immediate world brings
some guilt and a renewed desire to lend help.
