The characters are based on ones familiar to all from childhood
fairytales. Although in Act 1 the characters are broad and familiar,
all experience a transformation into in Act 2, showing growth and depth.

The Narrator - Aged 30's - 60's. The narrator acts as the Greek chorus
in Act 1; commenting and keeping the action going. Much to his
amazement, he is drawn into the stories in Act 2 with unforeseen
consequences.

Baker - Aged 30's. Childless by a curse placed on his family by the
Witch, the Baker leads the quest (along with his wife) to break the
curse. A good person by nature, he is faces with choices that test his
mettle and lead to unexpected actions.

The Baker's Wife - Aged 30's. She wants a child as much as her husband,
but is willing to "bend the rules" a little more. Wise and protective,
she finds herself in a situation that is irresistible, showing her that
what one has is often better than what one wishes for.

The Witch - Aged 20's - 30's. The Witch secretly wants her curse of
ugliness reversed and uses the Baker and the Baker's Wife to achieve it
in exchange for lifting their curse. She is the catalyst for the
action, and points out to the other characters that everyone views
situations differently.

Cinderella - Aged 20's - 30's. Oppressed and in servitude to her
step-mother and step-sisters, she is given the chance to get her wish,
but questions whether her wish is really what she wants. She shows
strength and fortitude in Act 2, to the point that she emerges as the
heroine.

Little Red Riding Hood - Aged - Teens - 20's. Traditional fairytale
character that is told not to stray from the path, but does. Sassy and
too smart for her own good.
Jack - Aged Teens - 20's. A bit of a dolt, but very lovable. Because
of his actions with the giant, all the characters are forced to face the
consequences in Act 2.

Jack's Mother - Aged 40's - 50's. No nonsense mother type. She knows
her son is a bit daft, but loves him anyway; but even the riches Jack
bestows upon her cannot keep her safe.

Mysterious Man - Aged 50's - 60's. A character that keeps popping in
and out of the shadows and hides a dark secret. Pivotal song in Act 2.
Possible doubling with Narrator.

Cinderella's Prince - Aged 20's - 30's. Arrogant and self centered.
Brother to Rapunzel's Prince. Cares more about the quest than what
happens after.

Rapunzel's Prince - Aged 20's - 30's. Just as arrogant and self
centered as his brother, Cinderella's Prince.

The Wolf - Ageless. Stops Little Red on her way to Grannie's.
Possible doubling with Cinderella's Prince.

Rapunzel - Aged 20's - 30's. Imprisoned in a tower by the Witch,
Rapunzel longs to see the world. When she is rescued by her Prince, she
finds out how cruel the world can be.

Cinderella's Stepmother - Aged 40's to 60's. Married Cinderella's
father and forces Cinderella into servitude to her own daughters.
Protective of her own daughters at Cinderella's expense.

Lucinda - Aged 20's - 30's. One of Cinderella's the step-sisters.
Described as beautiful but vile and black of heart. Great
comic bit in Act 2.

Florinda - Aged 20's - 30's. One of Cinderella's the step-sisters.
Again, described as beautiful but vile and black of heart. Great comic
bit in Act 2.

Cinderella's Father - Aged 40's - 60's. Meek and mild but truly loves
his daughter.

The Steward - Ageless. Servant to Cinderella's Prince. Has a pivotal
part in Act 2.

Grannie - Aged 50's - 60's. Little Red's grandmother who is eaten by
the wolf. One scene. Possible doubling with Cinderella's mother or the
Giant.

Cinderella's Mother - Aged 40's - 50's. One scene/song. Possible
doubling with Grannie or Giant.

The Giant - Ageless. A female offstage voice of the fabled Giant's
wife, who comes to seek revenge for the death of her husband. Must have
a commanding vocal presence. Possible doubling with Grannie or
Cinderella's Mother.

Jack's Cow - Ageless. Non speaking roles for one or two persons to
operate the cow.
