INVENTING VAN GOGH by Steve Dietz Auditions will be held on on Jan 16 & 18 at The Playhouse (12 S. Church Street, Schenectady - 382-2081) 7:30PM readings - 7:00 pm Sign up About the Play:  Van Gogh has one of the most extensive art catalogs in existence - he created some 900 paintings and 1100 drawings, all in the last ten years of his life.  That we know of.  But what if there are other paintings, lost or secreted, that we know nothing of?   This is where the play begins - with one man obsessed with a rumored, never seen final portrait of Van Gogh, long lost; another man obsessed with turning the rumor into a marketable truth, by whatever means; and a third man with a conundrum - should he fulfill one man's fantasy and the other man's designs, by forging the portrait?   INVENTING VAN GOGH is the story of all three men intertwined with the story of their parallel counterparts from the past - Gachet, Gaugin and Van Gogh himself.  Set against the backdrop of a murder 
mystery, the play explores the mystery of the truth in art, the truth in artists and the truth we collectively invent in order to make sense of both.  ROLES AVAILABLE -  Patrick Stone - (20s- 30s) - contemporary painter.  At an emotional and artistic crossroads. He was sure of what defined him and his art,  but now questioning.  Should have a bit of an edge.  Van Gogh (30s) - Erratic, Spontaneous. Colorful. He reflects the honesty and drama of his paintings.  Dr. Jonas Miller (doubles with Gachet) - (50s) A Van Gogh Scholar consumed by his subject. Dr. Paul Gachet (doubles with Miller) - (50s) Van Gogh's doctor, friend and art enthusiast.  A bit of a comic - joy of life.  Hallie Miller (doubles a Marguerite Gachet) (20s - 30s) Dr. Miller's daughter, Patrick's girlfriend. A mix of passion and disconnect as a result of her father's perceived absence. Margurite Gachet (doubles as Hallie Miller) (20s - 30s) Gachet's daughter.  An innocent of the period.  Jealous of Van Gogh's all 
consuming art.  Rene Bouchard (doubles as Gaugin) (40s)  Art authenticator.  Slick.   A touch of Euro Trash.Paul Gaugin (doubles as Bouchard) (40s) the modern image of Gaugin.  Brash, caustic, sure of himself and his art.  INVENTING VAN GOGH will be presented March 16 - 25, 2007 at the downtown Schenectady theater.
