Schenectady  Civic Players announces auditions for The  Trip to Bountiful  by 
Pulitzer-Prize-winner Horton Foote will take place on Tuesday, January 6, and 
 Thursday, January 8, at 7:00 P.M. at the Playhouse, 12 S. Church St.,  
Schenectady, NY  12305.  
The  Trip to Bountiful tells  a simple, tender story about an elderly, 
displaced woman and her longing to  return to her childhood home. The plot revolves 
around Carrie Watts, an aging  widow living with her son and controlling 
daughter-in-law in a two-room flat in  Houston, Texas. Mrs. Watts dreams of 
breaking out from under the rigid  supervision of her daughter-in-law and returning 
to the simpler freedom of her  old home in Bountiful. She succeeds in running 
away, reaching the Harrison bus  station, which she has been told is the 
closest place to Bountiful. There she  meets up with a sheriff her son and 
daughter-in-law put on her trail. The  sheriff helps her complete the final stage of 
her journey to  Bountiful. 
Available  Roles 
Mrs.  Carrie Watts  - 60 to 75 years old. Now widowed, she is forced by 
circumstances to live with  her son and daughter-in-law in a cramped two-room 
apartment, her only desire and  hope is to return to her former home in Bountiful, 
Texas, even just for a  moment. Her moments of balance are keen and strong, 
but sometimes when the heart  takes over the emotions rule the head. She is 
cheerful, wondrous and  apprehensive about her journey, but in her heart it feels 
right.   
Ludie  Watts-Age,  40's. Carrie’s son. Works as an accountant. He was 
unemployed for two years  while recovering from an illness, but he now has a new 
position, albeit at a  smaller salary. He is torn between caring for his mother 
and dealing with his  demanding wife.  Beaten down and  unsure of the demands 
being made on him, his mother’s journey gives him an  unexpected gift.  
Jessie  Mae Watts  – Age , late 30’s - 40’s. Ludie's wife. Self-absorbed, 
bitter and dependent on  Mrs. Watts' monthly government check to make ends meet. 
She has genuine feelings  for Ludie, but her relationship with his mother 
undercuts her feelings for him.  Finds an understanding that she did not expect.  
Thelma  -Early 20's. Newly-married, sweet, sad young woman. Returning to live 
with her  parents while her husband is overseas. Shares feelings with Mrs. 
Watts and  learns from her. 
Sheriff –  40’s – 50’s.  The sheriff of Harrison who befriends  Carrie. 
Ticket  Man – employee  of the bus terminal in Houston, busy and unconcerned. 
Other  small roles available for men and women.  
Light  Texas accents are welcome, but not necessary at the  auditions.
