Synopsis:

This is classic courtroom drama, pitting against each other two opposing and powerful beliefs; academic freedom and religious fundamentalism. Bert Cates is on trial for teaching the theory of evolution. The prosecuting attorney is Matthew Harrison Brady, three-time presidential candidate and leader of the crusade against evolution. His opponent is Henry Drummond, an attorney famous for successfully defending underdogs. Drummond makes the fight not about who is right and who is wrong but about the privilege of free-thought. Both Brady and Cates have the same rights, he says, "the right to be wrong." "A masterpiece . . . one of the truly great American dramas of this century."—Columbus, Ohio, Citizen.

  MATTHEW HARRISON BRADY
A righteous man who has run for President of the United States 3 times, and though he has lost each time he has gained a following of fervently religious people. THE REVEREND JEREMIAH BROWN
He is a fervent and deeply religious soul; and he is deeply unforgiving in his judgment of the sinners in his midst—even his own daughter.

  BERTRAM CATES
He is a young schoolteacher who, despite a law against the teaching of evolution, has introduced his middle-school students to the writings of Charles Darwin.

  E. K. HORNBECK
He is a reporter for the Baltimore Herald. He is committed to making fools of those with whom he disagrees.
