Auditions for Rehearsal for Murder will take place on Tuesday, March 3,
and Thursday, March 5, at 7:00 P.M. at the Playhouse, 12 S. Church St.,
Schenectady, NY 12305. This adaptation by D.D. Brooke from the teleplay by Richard
Levinson and William Link will be directed by Rita Russell.
When celebrated actress Monica Welles died a year earlier after bad opening
night reviews of her Broadway debut in Chamber Music, the police said it
was suicide. Her fiancé, playwright Alex Dennison, is now not sure it wasn’t
murder. He has brought together Monica’s friends and colleagues for a play
within a play in an attempt to ascertain “whodunit.”
Available Roles
(ages are approximate):
Alex Dennison—(30-50) Successful playwright and fiancé of Monica Welles.
Attractive, intelligent, perceptive, and determined. (major role)
Monica Welles—(25-35) Beautiful film star attempting to make it on the
legitimate stage. An engaging character with many dimensions and a secret.
Already deceased when the play opens, she appears in the many flashback scenes.
Fiancée of Alex Dennison. (major role)
Leo Gibbs—(35-60) Supporting actor in Chamber Music, but a major player
in this play. Married to Karen at the time of Monica’s death, he is a
second-banana comic actor whose career is not as successful as he or his wife would
like it to be. Described in the script as “a chunky, balding, character
comedian” he need not necessarily appear as such. (major role)
Bella Lamb—(40-60) The producer of Chamber Music who stood to lose a lot
if the play was not a hit. A woman with a boisterous personality, wit, and
great timing and who appears to be a sympathetic, motherly type. (major role)
Karen Daniels—(20-30) The ingénue in Chamber Music, in the present she is
a more sophisticated actor trying a different look. Divorced now from Leo,
at the time of Monica’s death the always ambitious Karen was Monica’s
understudy; her career stood to benefit from Monica’s death. She has an “attitude”
and is a little full of herself (major role)
David Matthews—(30-50) The handsome leading man in Chamber Music but
perhaps getting a little old to continue in those roles much longer. Egotistical
and proud of his ability with women, he does not take kindly to being turned
down. (major role)
Lloyd Andrews—(25-35) A young director, Chamber Music is a big break for
him, and he is thrilled to be working with the beautiful Monica Welles—
perhaps too thrilled. A bit of an intellectual. (major role)
Sally Bean—(25-30) Alex’s assistant whom he brought back from Maine.
Naïve and new to New York, she is enthusiastic and energetic. Comedy timing
essential. Very important in setting things up and keeping things going (while
this is a supporting role, the actor for this part appears throughout the
play and will be depended upon for some technical work with props; her character
is in essence the stage manager for Alex’s psychological experiment in
bringing all the other characters together)
Man in Auditorium—(30-45) This character turns out to be pivotal in Alex’s
investigation of Monica’s death. (large supporting role)
Male Officer—(25+) Officer who investigates Monica’s death; small
role/appears only in one flashback scene (three pages), but will probably be doubled
with either Santoro or the Lieutenant
Female Officer—(25+) Officer who investigates Monica’s death; small
role/appears only in one flashback scene (three pages), but will probably be
doubled with Loretta
Santoro—(indeterminate age) (three pages) Small supporting role. Man from
moving company who makes an important delivery (will probably be doubled with
either Male Officer or Ernie).
Ernie—(50+)Loyal watchman for the theater in which the action takes place—
medium supporting role in Act I only, but may be doubled with Lieutenant or
Santoro
Loretta—(30+) Stage manager for the theater in which the action takes place;
experienced and efficient (five pages)—will probably be doubled with Female
Officer
Second Man in Auditorium (Lieutenant)—(50+) (two pages end of Act II but
will probably be doubled with Ernie or Male Officer) Homicide detective;
experienced, no-nonsense type
This is an ensemble piece where at least eight of the characters are on
stage most of the time. Supporting cast members may be asked to assist with
moving some small set pieces or props during two quick set changes.
Rehearsal schedules will be arranged to avoid wasting actors’ time.
Production dates are May 8-10, and 13-17, 2009. Please direct all questions
to director Rita Russell at (518) 273-6003 or RitaLRussell@ aol.com.
