HMT ANNOUNCES OPEN AUDITIONS for an April/May

       Production of Matthew Barber’s

Enchanted April

Directed by Steve Coats

Sunday & Monday February 15 & 16 - 6:30-8:30pm

at the Spa Little Theater, Saratoga Spa State Park

Enchanted April take place in England and Italy in the 1920s, between the
two World Wars. It is a special time that hangs between great innovations in
the arts and culture and social upheavals. Two British women embark on a
brave-almost shocking(!) adventure: to travel to Italy alone and rent a
villa in the beautiful Amalfi Coast - without their husbands! They find
camaraderie with two other English women—all dissimilar in tastes and
manners—but unified in the desire to overthrow the dullness of their mundane
lives.

Lottie, Rose, Caroline and Mrs. Graves comprise the quarter of travelers.
For them, the allure of the Mediterranean is part of the adventure in
“Enchanted April”. In the course of the play, we see out heroines become
emboldened: the act of renting a villa becomes an act of self-discovery.
They leave the dreary climate of England and the rigid social structure of
the home life, in order to reaffirm their love of life and their spirit of
independence.

“Enchanted April” is a delightful comedy of manners, full of surprises and
romance. It embraces the powerful transformative power of friendship.
“Enchanted April” delights in the discovery of rejuvenation and hope and the
power of love.

Text Box: LOTTIE WILTON - 30s-40s, an upper-class Hampstead housewife, with
an active mind but no place to use it. A mental bumblebee, quietly
challenging, coming into her own. She instigates the idea of going to Italy.
When others ask, “Why?” her question is simply, “Why not?” She is stuck in a
stifling marriage to Mellersh and craves excitement, love and fulfillment.
MELLERSH WILTON - 30s-40s, vain, self centered London solicitor, loves the
sound of his own voice, making speeches, being in charge. He does have his
vulnerable side, but can’t show it. Like everyone in the play, his façade
begins to melt when he encounters the charms of Italy. He also has a great
bit with a towel and a hot shower.
ROSE ARNOTT - 30s-40s, more reserved than Lottie but she also feels more
trapped in her marriage. She feels betrayed by her husband, Frederick, and
this is what ultimately sends her off to Italy. She soon discovers within
herself a capacity for great warmth.

CAROLINE BRAMBLE - in her 20’
