The Story

This is a love story of the Thayers returning to their summer home on Golden
Pond for the forty-eighth year. Norman is nearing 80, with heart
palpitations and a failing memory – but still as tart-tongued, observant and
eager for life as ever. Ethel, ten years younger, delights in the small
things that have enriched and continue to enrich their long life together.
Chelsea visits with her fiance, who then go off to Europe leaving his son
behind for the summer. Billy becomes the grandson they have longed for and
Norman thrives in teaching his ward fishing and thrusting good books at him.
He also learns some lessons about modern teenage awareness - and slang - in
return. Ernest Thompson gives us a story that encompasses all our family
struggles of age, rage, love withheld, love unspoken and disappointment,
ending, if we are lucky, with forgiveness, acceptance and renewal.

The Cast

Norman Thayer, Jr.. . .

a reluctantly retired professor, is 60+. He is a bit of a crank, yet a
recognizable likeability

Ethel Thayer. . .

his wife, 55+, is nurturing and supportive and the perfect foil for Norman

Chelsea Thayer. . .

30-50 years and their daughter, is a divorced professional. She is very
eager for her father's approval and frequently disappointed. She is not the
son Norman wanted.

Bill Ray. . .

approximately late 30s to 50 years of age, is her dentist fiance. He is
uncomfortable with
Norman and the nature surroundings of the Thayer summer home in Maine.

Billy Ray. . .

Bill's "tough" teenage kid, between 11-15 years old. He is not afraid of
anything.

Charlie Martin. . .

the mailman, 30-40, has always had feelings for Chelsea.

Adult female voice. . .
