Capital Rep announces auditions for 33 VARIATIONS, a play by Moses Kaufman.

Nominated for five Tony awards, 33 Variations combines drama, music and
memory in a play about passion, parenthood and the transformative power of
beauty. At the end of his life, Beethoven obsessively wrote 33 variations on
a theme by Anton Diabelli – an act that has baffled musicologists for
centuries. In 33 Vairations, present-day musicologist Katherine Brandt
attempts to unravel Beethoven’s towering obsession. As her journey
progresses, her own obsession with genius – and her own legacy – is
unveiled.

Director: Gordon Greenberg

Production dates: Rehearsals begin August 17 Previews start: September 9
Press opening: September 15 Closing performance: Oct. 3.

SEEKING:

AEA

(1) Female (50s): Gertrude. German music librarian. Knowledgeable,
intelligent, compassionate. She is the practical counterpoint to the
obsessive Dr. Brandt, whom she assists in research. She understands the
pasion of Dr. Brandt and the foibles of those driven by ambition and
oncoming death. A bit crusty, she has a great capacity to be a real friend.
GERMAN ACCENT.

Non-Union:

(1) Female (20s-early 30s): Clara. Dr. Brandt's daughter. Caretaker by
default, Clara is bright, energetic and artistic, making her life appear
slightly unconventional, especially to those who value tradition, discipline
and the life of the mind. Emotional, but hard to get to know. Guarded,in
part because she has is dealing - or not dealing-- with the loss of her
mother. Her mother considers her an underachiever, which is at the center
of their conflict. Struggles with intimacy, but is tryimg to keep it
together. Has been unsuccessful with romance because of the difficulty of
showing her vulnerable side. Has a hard time getting close to her mother
for they are two sides of the same coin (but they don't know it -- yet).
The real story of 33 Variations is the development of a truly meaningful
mother-daughter relationship.

Males

NON-AEA

Anton Diabelli (40s-50s): A "lite" composer and music publisher. He may
not be an artist, but he tries hard. Practical. A business man. Deadline
driven. Excited and flustered by the artistic passions of Beethoven. Where
Beethoven delves deeper, Diabelli is content to dabble. Where Beethoven
forgets to eat, Diabelli enjoys every bite. Ruled by popular appeal. It's
not that he's a bad composer because he can be quite good, but he's the
Andrew Lloyd Webber to Beethoven's John Cage.

We will see non-AEA and AEA members for both of the following:

Mike (20s-30s) Male nurse who takes care of Dr. Brandt. A very pleasant
fellow. Has learned from being around illness to live everyday. Leads with
his heart and enjoys life. Falls hard for Clara. Likes popular music; knows
nothing about classical music and Dr. Brandt's work, but respects her
passion and drive. Would like to protect everyone from the realty of Dr.
Brandt's illness, but is forced to be the messenger of bad news. A good guy.
Clara can't believe he's for real, but he is.

Schindler (40s-60s): Beethoven's assistant, valet, confidente, press
secretary, whatever is necessary. Ironic and droll. He's the front man for
the passionate, mercurial, problematic Beethoven. Unflappable. He
understands the artistic spirit and is proud to be friend to Beethoven.
Gertrude's counterpart. He's the guy you have to get through at every front
desk of an important person. He appears formidable, but he's got a big
heart and loads of respect for Beethoven. He's funny in a very dry way.
