      Based on Patricia MacLachlan’s Newbury Award-winning book and adapted by Joseph Robinette, this comedy/drama with music is set around the turn of the last century. It is the story of Kansas farmer, a widower with two children, who places an ad in the newspapers seeking a wife. A spinster from Maine responds and travels to Kansas for a month’s stay in order to determine whether or not she’ll make the move permanent. The story is narrated by the daughter as an adult, and is at times exciting, tumultuous, and poignant. Described as “an exquisite, sometimes painfully touching tale” filled with “wisdom and gentle humor. . .a tender story about the fragile beginnings of a family relationship on its way to permanence” the play will appeal to children and adults alike.

            Major Characters 

            Jacob Witting -  a Kansas farmer aged 30-35 
            Anna Witting -  his young daughter, approx. 12 years old 
            Caleb Witting -  his younger son, approx. 8 years old 
            Matthew Nordstrom -  a neighboring farmer 
            Maggie Nordstrom -  his wife 
            Rose Nordstrom -  their daughter, close in age to Witting children 
            Violet Nordstrom -  their other daughter, close in age to Witting children 
            William Wheaton -  a Maine fisherman, Sarah’s brother who is a bit younger than she 
            Meg Wheaton -  his wife, approx. William’s age 
            Sarah Wheaton -  his sister—approx. 30-35 
            Adult Anna -  Anna Witten in her 20s, or possibly a bit older 

            Minor Characters (All are very small roles which may be played by either men or women
            and can be doubled if necessary, but are NOT to be caricatures.) 

            Ephraim -  a paperboy 
            Howie -  a postman 
            Eben -  a coachman 
            Levi -  a stationmaster 
            Mr. Titus -  a farmer 
            Chester Upshaw -  a salesman 
            Judson Moffet -  a neighbor of the Wittings 

      Singing is an important part of the story and will be done live by Sarah, and the Witten and Nordstrom families. It can be a capella, or accompanied by a stringed instrument, but must be simple, spontaneous in feeling, and not in any sense a “performance.” NOTE: Please come prepared to sing one of the following traditional songs: Billy Boy, Skip to My Lou, Buffalo Gals, or Some Folks. 

      Production dates are March 25—April 3. We expect to do at least one weekday performance to be attended by school children on Wednesday, March 30, which, of course, would necessitate all actors being available.

Sand Lake Center for the Arts - Circle Theatre Players,

The Center is a renovated, historically significant 1835 church
with a fully equipped open performing space for theatrical productions, 
community meetings, concerts, workshops and classes; and is available for rent.
The light-filled Gallery boasts original stained glass windows 
and exhibits artists' work throughout the year. 
The Gallery and Cafe are open one hour prior to events.
